More double headers for Cape Town

After the carnival atmosphere that prevailed at Cape Town Stadium on Friday night during the Absa Premiership double header, local football supporters could see more of ‘Super Fridays’.

The matches between Vasco da Gama and Orlando Pirates, and Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic drew a crowd of 45 000.

“To have the tickets sold out before 2pm on Friday was very encouraging and to see 45 000 people of different colours making their way to the stadium was very exciting,” Urban Warriors CEO George Comitis says.

“I’m happy that all the teams that played on Friday did not disappoint with the quality of football, even though I would have been more than happy to see Vasco da Gama collecting at least a point.

“This was good advert for football in Cape Town and there could is the possibility of staging more of these double-headers in the City this season.”

Despite losing 2-1 to Pirates, Vasco should take pride from their performance says coach Carlos das Neves.

“To play in front of such a big crowd was fantastic,” he says. “I think against Pirates we showed that we have the ability to do well this season.”
