The big news coming out of Maritzburg United’s media day on Tuesday is that Kurt Lentjies has finally signed a three-deal with the club.
The attack-minded midfielder joined the Team of Choice on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns when last season’s transfer window opened in November, but now his move has been made permanent.
“Coach Ernst Middendorp is the main reason for me joining Maritzburg United. I like the environment at Maritzburg, the players and the fans,” Lentjies says. “But they way in which Middendorp gets the team to play is the thing that does it for me. Now, it’s not just about me, but what I can do for the team.
“Last season we were pushing for a Top 8 finish near the end but just missed out; this season we have a better chance of achieving that or even breaking into the Top 5.”
While addressing the media, Middendorp identified defence and scoring goals as the areas that his team needs to improve in. Now that Mario Booysens has returned to Ajax Cape Town after a loan spell last season, Middendorp is still on the lookout for a suitable replacement.
“Mario did well during his time with us. His brother David, also a defender, has been training with us in pre-season and we have not finalised a deal with him. Sundowns’ Derek Spencer is another player we’re hoping to agree terms with as well,” Middendorp pointed out.
With regards to the goalscoring department, Ajax’s Diyio Sibisi has been spotted training with the club, having also been trying his luck at Bloemfontein Celtic.
