Former African Wanderers, Durban Bush Bucks and AmaZulu player, Reggie Shelembe passed away this week after a long illness.

Shelembe was coaching the Pietermaritzburg-based Vodacom side, Maritzburg City, at the time of his death. He had been with them since the days of the MTN League.

Shelembe coached Mbulelo ‘OJ' Mabizela, Jimmy Tau, Mabhuti Khenyeza, Thokozane Mshengu, Arthur Bartman and Siphesihle Ngobese who all wore City colours when they were still in the First Division.

Besides playing for a number of KZN professional teams during the mid Eighties, Shelembe also coached Usuthu for a short while with Thabo Dladla.

He was a teacher at KwaPata Secondary School and where he also recruited the current Orlando Pirates midfielder, Siphelele ‘Shaka Zulu' Mthembu.

He also played a major role in developing the game in KZN Midlands region and was one of the founders of Pietermaritzburg Soccer Legends under the leadership of Zeph Mthembu, another former Usuthu stalwart.

"It's a big loss to the Maritzburg community, his school and to the entire game," said Mthembu.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalised but Shelembe will be buried this weekend.

KickOff extends heartfelt condolences to Shelembe's family, relatives and friends.

Death is scandalous because it does not choose where it should strike. The great man who has vision like Yizebekhala has to leave us with the unfulfilled ambition and goal- to live longer and create big and good things for soccer, KZN and South Africa and the World at large. The man has not been a failure. Those who are left behind have tangible things to point at which are the fruits of his toil and efforts. Itr would be proper for me to say IQhawe alilale ngoxolo. Uyibekile waphinde wayishiya induku ebandla.Foe me as USuthu supporter I say we have lost one of the Greats. Im happy Torvey is not there at AMAZULU FC not to recognise the legend.

What a blow to developmental football in KZN and the country in general. Bra Reggy, may your soul find peace in heaven. Condolences to the Shilembe and Hlope families, your friends and colleagues including Zipho Dlangalala, Thabo Dladla and Shakes Mashaba.
