Anthony Annan has mixed fortunes for Rosenberg

Joy and misery for Annan and Dede

Many of Ghana’s World Cup stars are back to their jobs at club level and quickly into the thick of events as the major European club seasons kick in.

Anthony Annan, omnipresent for Ghana at the 2010 World Cup, kick-started the current Norway season in the manner his career in the Scandinavian country has gone: high and low.

The midfielder struck a goal for Rosenborg against their 4-3 win over Start Kristiansand, but was sent off five minutes later for a second yellow card.

Goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, who has ambitions of playing for Ghana, did his chances no harm when he played the full game for Stromsgodset in their 2-1 win over Ranheim.

Annan’s midfield partner at the World Cup, Dede Ayew, played another start by Olympic Marseille, but their bad start to the season got worse as they lost 3-2 away to Valenciennes.

The upside for Dede was he scored a goal, Marseille’s second with five minutes left, after he had been turned over for a penalty that brought the reigning champions into the game.

Another Ayew who would have taken a lot of positives from the second week was Jordan Ayew, who was played more than 30 minutes alongside his senior brother in the defeat.

The English season got underway, with all three of Ghanaian players there in the thick of affairs.

Michael Essien played the entire game in Chelsea’s 6-0 demolition of West Brom, while John Paintsil and John Mensah were both involved in drawn games.

Paintsil started Mark Hughes’ first official game in charge at Fulham and did his prospects of holding unto his place no harm at all, especially with a brilliant tackle in the opening ten minutes and an all around solid display.

Also solid was John Mensah, who was thrown into the Sunderland mix barely a week after arriving back on loan.

Over in Scotland, Prince Buabeng’s steady progress continued at Dundee United when he played the full game in their opening day win over Saint Mirren.

Samuel Inkoom played the full game for Basle as he often has done but that did not prevent them from going down 1-4 against Lucerne.
