Orlando Pirates winger Phenyo Mongala was sidelined from Botswana’s 1-1 draw against hosts Malawi with a stomach upset hours before Wednesday match at Blantyre’s Kamuzu Stadium.
Botswana coach Stanley Tshosane, whose team remain top of Group K of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with seven points, complained in a post-match interview that the absence of Mongala undermined his team’s chances of grabbing maximum points.
“Two of my key players were vomiting so I could not use them. I’m nonetheless happy with the point,” Tshosane said after one-time Kaizer Chiefs target Dave Banda had cancelled out the visitors’ 65th-minute strike from Ramathakwe Ntiretse.
Mongala had before the match relished the prospect of squaring up against Pirates teammate Joseph Kamwendo, who had a quiet game and was replaced at halftime by Esau Kanyenda.
Another Pirates striker, Chiukepo Msowoya, played a full game and was denied by the crossbar after heading in from a cross by Fischer Kondowe, who was recently released by Black Leopards.
