Only four PSL teams, Orlando Pirates (4), Kaizer Chiefs (3), Ajax Cape Town (1) and Mamelodi Sundowns (1) have provided players for the South African National Under-17 team currently in camp preparing for the upcoming friendly match against Lesotho.

Head coach Solly Luvhengo has called up three players from the Aspire Academy in Qatar to fortify the team. Defender Nthuthuko Radebe, midfielders Happy Simelela and Phakamani Mngadi are expected to lead the charge against Lesotho.

In a statement released, Safa says the Johannesburg camp is part of an ‘intense preparation for a crucial and highly anticipated African Youth Championship qualifying match against Burkina Faso.’

Amajimbos will engage Burkina Faso in a two legged encounter, starting with the home leg on Saturday, August 28, followed by an away match on the 11th of September 2010.

Amajimbos will play Lesotho on Sunday, August 8 at the Setsoto Stadium in Maseru, and with the 2011 Under-17 FIFA World Cup scheduled for Mexico; Safa and Amajimbos’ sponsors FNB have arranged for an international tour in Argentina.

The team will play against Boca Junior or River Plate youth teams. The tour will culminate in an international friendly match against their Argentinean counterparts on Friday, October 1.

“The Argentina tour will assist us as we work hard to qualify for the 2011 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Our immediate goal obviously is to qualify for the African Youth Championship in Rwanda, and from then on the sky is the limit,” said Luvhengo.

Where are the players from other regions like EC and KZN? If these peope are serious about development they need to scout in all places.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani): 2010-08-04 14:41

That is the big problem in our country. U are only somebody if you associated with big names. This shud not be SA under 17 but Gauteng under 17. There a lot of youngsters all ovver the country and very good academies in Kzn, Cape town etc. As to why only select from Gauteng is very disturbing. There are lot of players who comes from these so called small towns in the eyes of SAFA and its leaders ( who took 21 out of 64 world cup games to 1 province but im not complaining) These lower ranks national team coaches shud start scouting all over the country not only in GP.
