Al Ahly begin Champions League charge

Veteran defender Wael Gomaa notched a late goal to help Al-Ahly beat archrivals Ismaily in their Orange CAF Champions League Group 'B' clash on Sunday.

It served Ahly's maiden victory at the mini-league stage of the competition and leaves Ismaily without a point and perched at the bottom of the standings.

Gomaa, who extended his stay with the 'Red Devils' last week netted the match winner in added-on time to give Ahly a famous victory over their fellows.

Youngster Mohamed Talaat broke the deadlock on 58 minutes of the closely contested encounter held at the Cairo International Stadium.

Mohamed Abougreisha levelled for the 'Samba Boys' on 80 minutes before Gomaa grabbed the winner in the dying embers of the game.

Algerian giants JS Kabylie lead the pack on the standings with six points, Ahly trail in that order on four points, Nigeria's Heartland FC has a point with Ismaily at the bottom pointless.

On Saturday, Tunisian giants Esperance made it two wins in Group 'A' with a lone goal victory over Dynamos of Zimbabwe.

Osama Darragi scored the only goal of the match six minutes from time of the encounter at the November 7 Stadium in Rades.

The victory makes Esperance, winners of the competition in 1994 the only club with a hundred percent record in the group.

The Tunisians managed a similar margin result over Algeria's Entente Setif in their group phase opener in Setif a fortnight ago.

The 'Blood and Gold' lead the pack on six points, holders TP Mazembe follow in that order on four points, Entente Setif have just a point with Dyanmos at the bottom without a point.
