Rangers prepared to pay R20-m for SA pair

Posted: 2010-07-30 09:33

Glasgow Rangers are closing in on central defender Bongani Khumalo and striker Katlego Mphela and are prepared to offer more than R20-million for the pair.

Reports from Scotland this morning say that the Ibrox side have studied the capabilities of and are ready to beat off interest from the Premiership and move for the pair.

It is believed Tottenham have invited SuperSport's Khumalo over for trials while Mamelodi Sundowns' Mphela has been linked with former Rangers manager Alex McLeish's Birmingham City.

But Rangers, who have already received permission to talk to Khumalo, hope to get in first after both players had been recommended by Rangers' manager in waiting Ally McCoist, who was in South Africa for the World Cup.

Ibrox manager Walter Smith confirmed on Wednesday night that the 23-year-old hard-tackling SuperSport defender, who has won 23 caps for his country, is a player he is considering seriously along with Mphela.

Smith said: "They are the right type and I think they could enhance our squad."

But Smith knows Khumalo - along with 25-year-old Mphela, who was top scorer in the PSL last season - are attracting interest from other clubs now Mphela has already made it clear he wants to leave Mamelodi Sundowns for a bigger league.

Mphela has had spells with Strasbourg - making his debut when he was 19 - and Stade Reims in France but believes he has regained his best form and wants to prove that in a better environment.

Mphela, who has scored 13 times in 31 internationals, was also named player of the year and Rangers have been attracted by the fact he has a physical presence up front and is capable of holding the ball up as well as scoring.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-30 09:40

Khumalo guys??? hahahahah!!! I have watched this guy playing many times. He is too slow, and playing many back passes. he dont attack and he only goez foward only when there is a corner kick. Stop ovarating this young boy, he need to get more experiance. we were blaming mbazo at the world Cup, but Mboza was there culprit.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-30 09:44

Mphela dont wana tok about him coz you know. he only scored only, when he getthrough pass. he cannot position himself, he is a selfish player. shooting unneccesarily, panicking, Scoring lucky goals. They must thank Pitso, adawise, they shud be cutted down.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-30 09:45

Khumalo dont even know to cut the off-side. always standing with the goalkeeper. anyball he got he make a back pass.

mthwakazi : 2010-07-30 09:47

the league will fit nicely to the pairs ambitions and style of play.not as high pressure as the epl and not as useless as romania and such.wish them well.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-30 09:50

Internet Internet Internet yasibulala madoda tjooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

On a serious note though,we should let as many players as possible go and play overseas to gain more experience of playing in a WC.Else we must attract overseas players to come and play in our own league,STOP moving around WASHED out african players like Amazulu,Wits Celtic do.

Chintu,Sserunkuma,Babale,Chansa, these players will always find a way of moving from team to team and it seems they never grow beyond 30yrs!!!!!!!!!Mhhhhhhhhh

zorro: 2010-07-30 10:15

scottish league is the type of league that Bafana players should be aiming for, not Qatar and Romania. its even better when they go and play for a big team. babulale killer

Wonder: 2010-07-30 10:21

Good for both lads, this is the right league indeed for them. they should stay clear of Qatar,Cyprus and Romania.

Somebody is feeling sad because no Pirates player is courted by overseas teams, he Tivani?

Osborne : 2010-07-30 10:28

I think both guys deserve it! @ Tivani...why would a 4 and 5 player attack? He is one of the last line of defence hence he cant move forward except for corners and set pieces!!!! know your football!

Jomo: 2010-07-30 10:29

@Soccer Critic ( Tivani )
Why do you like to compare players? Hhayi maan these guys are human beings & human beings cant be the same. I support Pirates but at times your comments are biased & you have a tendency of over praising Pirates even where its unnecessary. I know this wont go down well with you but please let us not let our hatred for other teams overule our thinking capabilities. I hope these players will make it at Sctland because the experience that they will get there will be handy for the National team.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-30 10:35

dont think they will get game time. they are stars in only SA, not in England.

Soccer Critic ( Tivani ): 2010-07-30 10:37

Jomo: 2010-07-30 10:29

ok::::: see what gona happen?

thivhu....: 2010-07-30 10:40

My question: Did Mphela had a price tag? I guess not because Sundowns dont put price on a player, they are not a selling club rather a buying club. I dont see 20 millions fit for him. I even know the answer from management: 20 million is too little. Lets wait and see. Good luck Boys!

Iam Black and Iam Gold!

Makaykay: 2010-07-30 11:00

This "SOCCER CRITIC(TIVANI)' charactor is clueless about soccer,he hardly say anything intelligent and should be allowed only one post per topic because he does not contibute anything meaningful.

Bongani Khumalo is a world class defender and a natural leader and deserve to play at the highest level.
Katlego is also a natural striker, with better supplies from his teamates he could be one of the best strikers in the world.

I also would like to see Khuboni,Tshabalala,Modise play in the top leagues in the world because they're world class.I think south africa has talent that can compete with the best in the world and all we need is exposure, experience and self belief. For me the future looks very bright.

maftown: 2010-07-30 11:02

ha ha ha ha, Soccer critic take a bow, you have the energy to slugg it out against Khumalo!! I could have sworn something is going on between you two, did Khumalo f@#%*k your girl maybe?

Busani: 2010-07-30 11:08

These Rangers need to specify who they buying for how much, these are not BB players, one is Sundowns' and the other is Supersport's, we don't want to see money fight...

This Tivani moffy mara...

awume ngo Teko pls, even Mphela doesnt desrve more than R5m

Marlon: 2010-07-30 12:04

This is a 2 for 1 deal. This is cheap, and both clubs are unlikely to accept this. Scotland is a good place for both of them, as they will play regularly, and have plenty of media focus, to move to England if they do well. The most important thing for them is to get regular playing time, and scotland will provide that opportunity. R20 million for both is cheap though, but we are in a recession.

Mrakathi: 2010-07-30 12:14

Glasgow Rangers does not just sign any player. They check the league standing of the players current team & the number of games played. They dont just rely on previous clips & the agent. This shows that this players are world class. You go boys.

Wonder: 2010-07-30 12:29

"Tshabalala is being tipped to earn R500,000PM on that R5MILLION deal"

Really? that way too little, Mbazo earns morethan that per week. see what loyalty and local fame does to you? Mbazo should thank Jomo he is where he is today, had he played for Ch!mpa,Pirates and Sundowns, he would be playing PSL football by now.

We should happy that these boys will be plying their trade in Europe. This will help improve our BB's quality. Bongani and Katlego are key players for BB, in our quest to become a top footballing nation in the near future.

I see many are criticising Katlego, but he is the best we have at the moment. Bongani is quality and it would be refreshing if he were to take over as captain. It's clear for all to see that Mbazo is a liability, but I don't think Pitso is thick skinned enough to drop him.

Soccer Critic doesn't know his football and Chain Gang needs to think again.

Champ "Superbrand": 2010-07-30 13:28

When I these guys signing. I dont understand this. If you play for Sundowns, Pirates and KAizer Chimpanzees its difficult to find a team overseas because these teams ask for too much money. Overseas teams are afraid of buying flops for a lot of money hence they buy players from Ghana, Cameroon, ivory coast, if its here at home they will rather buy from cosmos, Ajax, Arrows and Supersport. I do not see that cow uMatatazela going overseas not even India. The guy is overated. He is worth R2M, no one will pay more than that believe me. He should have taken the Turkey offer of R500 000 per month, he will never be paid that much here not even Sundowns will pay him that let alone aboBoby Tender boy Motaung.

Bongani Khumalo is the one going overseas. Mark my word. Whether he will make it or not, its dificult to tell, the guy was good here at Mzansi. Let me take this opportunity to say all the best for him, with hard work he will succeed.
