Cairo Derby tops weekend CAF matches

Posted: 2010-07-29 15:30

Three former champions, including holders TP Mazembe Englebert, will look to build on good starts to the CAF Champions League and solidify their command of the final group stage at the continental showpiece this weekend.

DR Congo's Englebert, Esperance of Tunisia and Algeria's JS Kabylie all won away in the opening round of group matches a fortnight ago and look well placed for a spot in October's semi-finals if they can claim another three points at the second try.

All three can claim home advantage with Englebert and Esperance potentially going six points clear in the top two places of Group A.

Mazembe inaugurate their new artificial pitch at the Kenya Stadium in Lubumbashi on Sunday against Entente Setif of Algeria, while Esperance will take on Dynamos of Zimbabwe on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, JS Kabylie, who are hosting Nigeria's Heartland FC, can move to six points from six as well if they win in Tizi-Ouzou in Group B.

But all of these games will be overshadowed by the Egyptian derby in Cairo where Al Ahly hosts Ismaili on Sunday in a contest made all the more special because it is a rare meeting between teams from the same country in the group phase of the Champions League.

In the first round, Ahly gained a valuable point away in Nigeria earlier this month but Ismaili suffered a home defeat to JS Kabylie.

Another loss for Ismaili would leave them floundering, but the acquisition of Nigerian striker Ndubuisi Eze has the potential to be a significant boost, given his past experience the later stages of the CAF Champions League when he played for Al Hilal of Sudan.

Eze may not be the only new face to line up on Sunday night as Al Ahly's recent signing, Mohamed Gedo may make an appearance.

Top scorer at January's CAF Africa Cup of Nations and scorer of the winner in the final for Egypt, Gedo was previously left out of the Al Ahly team for the match in Owerri against Heartland, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Last season in Egypt's Premier League, both meetings between Ahly and Ismaili ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mazembe had a run out on their new pitch last weekend in beating a provincial selection in a festival match to mark the re-opening of the extensively renovated stadium, where they have had overwhelming past success.

Entente Setif will not be an easy opponent despite the Algerians losing at home in the first set of group matches to Esperance. Setif have been preparing for the trip to the Congo by hosting a training camp in Egypt.

"We need at all costs to recover from our loss at home in the first round. The game against Mazembe is a watershed for us. We have to make sure we do not return home empty-handed," Setif's striker Nabil Hemani said in the build-up to Sunday's game.

Away defeats for both Setif and Dynamos would leave them with a massive catch-up task. Dynamos lost 2-0 at home to Mazembe in their opening Group A game and then had an eight game winning streak in Zimbabwe's premier league ended last weekend.

@Colin Udoh, a game is going on now between Nigeria and Colombia, and yet no updates on this site. Frankly speaking you have not been fair to our ladies. Even if their efforts are not appreciated by others, certainly not you.I expect a seasoned sports journalist like you to sing their praises.

Fantastically Fabulous Falconets qualify for U-20 Women World Cup final. http://mynigeriannews.blogspot.com/2010/07/fantastically-fabulous-falconets.html

Garvey: 2010-07-29 21:29

@Y..I..N..K..A - I am really happy for the falconets. Reaching the final of the U-20 World cup is a good achievement but beating the Germans on Sunday will be an uphill task. I wish them all the luck.

Emeka : 2010-07-30 00:26

Germany will beat our grandmothers

Apiripah: 2010-07-30 02:50

@Oka,Jealousy is a root of hatred.I got a call from Nigeria during Ghana VS uruguay SA world cup, telling me how Nigeria was vibrating in support of Ghana but you are here now talking down on Nigeria falconets just because of jealousy. Now i know that Nigeria is dealing with the most tremendous hate in Ghana.

Apiripah: 2010-07-30 03:00

@Emeka,There is no height,no depth that the spirit of man cannot attain.Even if they loose to Germany,Nigerians are fine with it but I want you to know that, there is a law of faith and belief. All things are possible to him who believes that all things are possible. Also try to learn how to think before you log into your computer.

Richie: 2010-07-30 04:29

Emeka (if that's your real name), I doubt whether you ever played a competitive soccer. Therefore, please, next time, if you’ve nothing meaningful to contribute, kindly stay away from posting comment. It’s obvious from your absurd comment that you detest success.

While everyone is pouring encomiums on the Falconets for triumphing against the Colombians and wishing them success in the final match against the Germans, you chose to be a lone ranger.

ESHO: 2010-07-30 07:29

wat do u expect from people like a emeka or watever you called your... are u telling dat your gana ladies does not have a mama of 33 in there under 20female team????? even if we have never meet them b4,,,,, we saw them on TV... lol....

Onyoko: 2010-07-30 14:47

Oka and Emeka, both of you are not suppose to be in this forum. Everytime your comment is always nagative. Enemy of progress! You are calling them old ladies and grand mother because your sister could not pass the screening after all you lobbied for her that time. I have the details of how you wanted your sister to make the team.

Kofi : 2010-07-30 14:54

Ghana is always with nigeria. Why do think these people are ghanaians? Should i believe you hate ghana?

Eric: 2010-07-30 16:48

@Apiripah, thanks man !! You are a true west african brother.
@Kofi, the same here. Nigerians are always with Ghana. Many Nigerians wore a somber look the day Ghana lost, no thanks to the "hands of Suarez". We all need each other. Thanks a lot.

I hope that all forumites will always come together to cheer their african brothers rather than posting provocating comments on this site.
