Celtic vs Birds in Mangaung Cup

Free State Stars have been drawn against Ajax Cape Town in the first semi-final of the 2010 Old Mutual Mangaung Cup, while defending champions Bloemfontein Celtic will lock horns with Moroka Swallows in the other match.

The draw for the annual one-day tournament, which will take place at Botshabelo Stadium on August 1, was conducted at the Summerwood Country Estate in Bloemfontein last night. The first semi kicks off at 09h30 and the second at 11h30. Winners will meet in the final at 15h30.

“The draw is fair and we are happy about it,” Celtic communications manager Petros Augousti told KickOff.com last night.

“Old Mutual Mangaung Cup is a wonderful pre-season tournament. We are glad it is growing in leaps to bounds. It offers the players a fantastic opportunity to see how far they are as far as their fitness is concerned ahead of the new season,” he adds.

“We are looking forward to it. We'll go out there to successfully defend our title on the day. Last year we won the tournament and went on to do well in the league as well. We believe that winning it again this time around will spur on our boys to finish in the higher position come the end of the next season,” Augousti concludes.

Stars representative Nkosana Mashinini was also excited about the draw, saying: “We are happy with the draw. At the same time we are also glad to have avoided Celtic.

“We are ready for the tournament. Come August 1 people will see a different Free State Stars. We want to do well this season. It will be great for us to lift the trophy before the season kicks off,” Mashinini adds.

The tickets for the tournament are already on sale at Shoprite Checkers and Computicket. They cost R25 for adults and R10 for juveniles. Tickets will also be available from Celtic offices on Monday.

Pre season one-day tournaments are meant to check different combinations and for fitness purposes. To win a cup like that helps to increase morale of the players. Once they win a cup like that they have the winning mentality unlike somebody next door who specialise on TCC.
