Taiwo's Madrid move stalls

Posted: 2010-07-22 16:51

Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo's proposed switch from French champions Marseille to Spanish side Atletico Madrid has stalled, BBC Sport understands.

Taiwo had been expected to finalise the deal on Wednesday but the player's agent Michael Coker says the deal has hit problems.

The Nigerian had agreed personal terms with the Spanish side on Tuesday, but Marseille are apparently insisting they want the transfer fee upfront rather than in instalments in the future.

"The club understands the position of the player, he has served Marseille with strong loyalty and commitment, but now that he desperately craves a deserved move they are stalling on a final approval," Coker told BBC Sport on Wednesday.

"If they fail to let Taiwo go now, then they stand to lose six million euros in transfer and salary - the ball is in Marseille's court now to play or lose completely. Sadly the man in the middle of everything insists he does not want to stay at the club anymore and we expect everyone at the club to respect that."

Taiwo has also apparently fallen out with the Marseille coach Didier Deschamps over the problems with the transfer.

"Unfortunately an incident happened involving the coach and the player, something that has never happened in six years of his stay there," Coker explained.

The 25-year-old joined Marseille from Nigerian side Lobi Stars in 2004 and has been a regular at the club until last season.

He won the French double with Marseille last season.

Look Taiwo if m****ille refuses to release you, just relax and play by next year you will be a free agent and they will loose everything from you.
But Deschamps with his red head don't understand what it means to keep a player at bay he was once a player and i know how he left m****ile to juventus he should'nt forget that because of the old man heinze he has been keeping on you on bench which can kill your career.
Well the paramount king has spoken is either he let you go or loose you on free transfer agent and so shall it with the inspiration from the holly spirit.
Although you were and idiot for refusing offer from Man city last season where you can go and player football also earn money since you are from poor family but is not late by next year you will be a free agent cool down play your ball and ait for next season ok my son.

This is the advice of the paramount king and i have spoken and so shall it be .

Taiwo has the aces. Worst case, he plays with OM for another year and goes on a free transfer. Who loses? OM. Who gains? TT! Question? When will our league produce players that will fit easily into European teams? Why will we keep producing old men who will go into youth academies in europe before hoping to make it into first teams? Let's review the NPL now!

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Lars Edvin Lagerback, has turned down an offer by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for a fresh contract to continue with the job for a four-year deal.

Lagerback’s five months contract as Super Eagles’ coach expires at the end of this month and the NFF and the PTF who picked his bill were impressed with his performance at the World Cup and were ready to offer him a four-year deal to rebuild the Eagles but the Sweden’s former manager, who returned to his native land after the shameful exit of the Eagles, said he was not interested.

Acting President of the NFF, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, told Daily Sunsport that Lagerback after several attempts to speak with him finally called to inform him that he was sorry to reject the offer. “Lagerback has told me that he could not continue as the coach of Super Eagles because he feared that he might not be able to sign a four-year deal that would keep him in Nigeria for that long. He thanked the NFF for the opportunity given him to take the Eagles to the World Cup.

“He said that the experience was worth it and that he would always remember Nigeria and her good people. He also said that family opinion also made him turn down the job and wished Eagles well”, Alhaji Maigari said.

The NFF boss stated further that Lagerback also regretted his inability to come down to Nigeria to say a final goodbye and that he would send his technical report to the secretariat through the internet next week
Alhaji Maigari also disclosed that following the exit of Lagerback that the NFF board has decided to offer Samson Siasia the job to tinker the Super Eagles for the next four years as chief coach.

“We have had talks with Siasia and I must tell you that it was fruitful and all things being equal, he would put pen on paper next month subject to negotiation. Siasia is the coach Nigerians want and we shall give him all the support to succeed in this new job” Maigari stressed.

The finance committee’s former chairman of the NFF said that Eguavoen Austin would lead the Eagles to South Korea for the friendly after which he would take charge of the Under-23 squad, while Siasia would be in charge of the Eagles in the Nations Cup qualifying match against Madagascar in september.
