Tanzania’s national women soccer team, Twiga Stars, are expected to arrive in South Africa tomorrow to face Banyana Banyana in an international friendly on Saturday.
The Tanzania Football Federation Information Officer, Florian Kaijage, said this week that the match will be a befitting challenge for the host ladies ahead of the October Africa Women Championship finals set for South Africa.
Twiga moved into residential training camp a week ago at the Lamada Hotel in the city, while training sessions are taking place at the Karume Memorial stadium.
Banyana have already been in camp since July 19 and coach Augustine Makalakalane will make his final selection CAF Women’s Championships, that are being hosted by South Africa during October this year, after the match against the Tanzanian ladies.
Other teams that have qualified for the finals are defending champions Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon and Guinea.
“I currently have a squad of 30 players who will be put through training and assessment that make up the strong team I want to have for the championships. My aim is to get an additional 13 players to strengthen the team ahead of the CAF competition,” Makalakalane says.
“I’m glad we were able to secure the friendly against Tanzania, it will help me in selecting quality players and building a squad that will represent South Africa very well.”
Tanzania’s Twiga Stars made history by qualifying for their first-ever continental championship bid after a 3-3 draw against Eritrea in Asmara to march on with a 11-4 goal aggregate win.
