Falconets advance after Mexico draw

Ebere Orji scored her first goal of the 2010 FIFA Under-20 World Cup as Nigeria drew 1-1 with Mexico to progress to the tournament's knockout stages.

Nigeria, bursting with pace and enthusiasm, looked by far the better side as they hunted down the Mexicans at every turn, pressing them high and quick. But they failed to create openings, despite having more of the possession, and it took a corner kick for them to find the back of the net.

Nigeria scored twice in their last game from deliveries into the box and wary of that threat, Cecilia Santiago did well to turn Amarachi Okoronkwo’s shot out for a corner. Helen Ukaonu delivered the resulting set-piece, the goalkeeper flapped at it, Esther Sunday got the knockdown and Ebere Orji side-footed home.

Less than a minute later, Mexico had a chance to pull even; Stephany Majoy was left free in the box, but slipped with just the keeper in front of her.

And then Orji almost made it a second when her a dipping cross from distance clipped the far post with the goalkeeper stranded.

Orji was taken off injured at halftime and Nigeria lost their rhythm, allowing Mexico a dangerous foothold into the game, and in the end, it told.

With Japan winning in the other group game, Mexico were headed out of the competition unless they found a goal. It duly came when Natalia Garcia’s header from a corner found Garciamendez. She controlled the ball with her chest and crashed a right-footed volley into the net from close range.

The goal totally changed the complexion of the group, with Mexico leapfrogging Nigeria into first place on goals scored, while Japan headed out.

The Mexicans will meet the second placed team from Group D in Dresden, while Nigeria await the winners of the same section in Augsburg.

Mexico dominated the entire second half. The falconets did not turn up at all and could have gone home had the mexicans scored another goal.

I must comment that the coach is a huge joke. With under ten minutes left to play and Nigeria under pressure, he was heard telling a substitute going in for Nigeria to play in the midfield when the left back got injured and could not continue. So much for tactical know how.

The stadiums I understand are very scanty, the TV stations rarely air these matches and National FA's and FIFA pay less attention to it. Women participation in soccer and boxing should be discontinued especially in Africa. The physiological and anatomical exposures of this lady-mothers should form excellent moral grounds to ban and forbid women playing competitive soccer. I detest it!

objective bibby: 2010-07-21 21:08

@Billion, but what about tennis & basketball? what is the difference?

objective bibby: 2010-07-21 21:11

@ iyk, was it a game of two halves? what happened in the 1st half? were the mexicans also sleeping in the 1st half? pls give a complete ****ysis for those of us that didnt see the match.
where were you when they won convincingly against Japan? was it a different coach?

Jebsy: 2010-07-21 23:20

@billion, U r one of those that have no regard for women. U r one of those that think Men should dominate every affairs of life. Are these ladies not a human being like you? So, why cant they do what they enjoy doing best for their living? Your comment shows that you are a type of man that will be commanding your wife anyhouse like slave at home, that is only if you are not a gay, because your hatred for these ladies is becoming unbearabble. If it is Super Eagles that is playing, you will either complain about their hairdo, or their age. If anything is bothering you about Nigerian players that you cannot bear again, then stop watching National football instead of you coming here and criticize our players all the time.

@Jebsy, rather than attack me, why not attack the issues in my comment. Female boxing, weightlifting and soccer is a sore point in African sports. These sports are not part of women cultural/societal evolution in Africa. It debases womanhood! Our mothers never took part in it. My wife will not neither will my daughter be encouraged to be part of it. Leave the men to do these sports and the women their God-given roles!!

kessy: 2010-07-21 23:55

@ Objective Bibby, Iyk Is very right. I watched their matches from the first game against England to the last game against Mexico. The girls are very good but their weakness is the lack of a good coach. If you see the game against England, the girls are individually good players but not technically good. In the second game, Yes they won the game against Japan but they were somehow lucky in that game—if you see the second half of that game, you will see that the girls don’t have a coach—mind you that Nigeria was leading Japan 2-0 in the first stanza. In the game against Mexico today, it was the same story. Even, in the early stage of the match, it was this man on suite sitting on the Nigerian bench that was screaming at the girls. The girls are good but the lack of good coach will be their greatest undoing especially against a team such as the USA in their next game.

Jebsy: 2010-07-22 00:13

@Billion,first of all my comment did not attack you, rather, it attacked your bias thought. Think about it, how does African or Nigerian ladies playing football debases womanhood? I didn't get it? Are these ladies playing nude? The only way I can agree with you for women football to be ban in Nigeria and/or Africa is for men football to be ban as well.If you won't allow your daughter to play football, that's your decision and I respect it, but can you allow someone else's daughter to play it peacefully? This is free world bro, live and let others live mehnn!

kessy: 2010-07-22 00:15

@ Jebsy, it is obvious that @Billion is a conservative, Sharia law advocate and a very orthodox minded person. I have followed his postings in this forum for a very long time and it is also obvious that he hate anything that is a Western idea. In Billion's dictionary, women are just housewife and baby-makers.

michael: 2010-07-22 08:58

@holysaint:'we have a future than every african country'.That is my point exactly, you are so clueless about the real happenings in the world.Ghana is and will never be seriously regarded because Africa knows the negative mindset of Ghana.Have you ever wondered why countries with even worse reputation than Ghana are still given more regard than your so-called Ghana? You guys stink,I am hoping you guys do something to provoke the Nigerian people so they can go to war with ghana and atleast wipe out the entire population of Khumasi...U better be warned that day might come sooner than you think...sies!!!

Garvey: 2010-07-22 10:07

@Billion - There is not wrong in women playing football. I agree with you on weightlifting and boxing. These two sports are really not for women.

Latest on Taiye Taiwo Transfer:

M****ille Delay Taye Taiwo Switch To Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid were expected to complete the transfer of Taye Taiwo from M****ille yesterday but the move ha***** the brakes, with the French Champions demanding the full fee up front, the BBC have reported.

Taiwo had agreed terms with Los Colchoneros and the club had planned to pay the fee over a series of installments. L'OM clearly want the money up front now, as coach Didier Deschamps most likely wants to bolster his squad in preparation for their Champions League assault, and they have stalled any deal for the time being.

The player's agent, Michael Coker, told the BBC: "The club understands the position of the player, he has served M****ille with strong loyalty and commitment, but now that he desperately craves a deserved move they are stalling on a final approval.

"If they fail to let Taiwo go now, then they stand to lose €6 million in transfer and salary - the ball is in M****ille's court now to play or lose out completely.

"Sadly, the man in the middle of everything insists he does not want to stay at the club anymore, and we expect everyone at the club to respect that."

Coker went on to explain that Taiwo had never had any problems with the players or staff in his six years at the club since joining as a teenager from Nigerian club Lobbi Stars. However, the problems which have arisen from his potential transfer have caused a rift between player and club and for all parties it appears best for the left back to move on.

Taiwo had been a regular for M****ille up until last year, when the arrival of Gabriel Heinze pushed the powerful defender down the pecking order.

Was Taiye Taiwo a teenager when he join Masseile? I beg you Mr Agent Taiwo was already 30yrs old when he left this country for France. Abeg Mr agent stop telling us stories, as we all know the true age of every naija players.

@ kessy, introspect i agreed with you. i saw the 1st two matches as well but not the last against Mexico. According to reports the girls did very well in the 1st half that a friend called me to joke that the girls should have represented Nig in SA.
Having said that, i agreeed the technical bench needs to be beefed up against US. Imagine, the coach was busy dancing when they equalised against England in a match they should ve won. In fact, the ****ysts on Ghana TV (GTV) described him as a joke as well, tactically bereft to propel the girls to go for the kill.
