Taiwo set for Madrid switch

Posted: 2010-07-21 09:46

Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo is close to completing a switch from French Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille to Spanish side Atletico Madrid, according to the BBC.

Taiwo who has been hankering on a move away from Marseille in search of first team football is expected to finalise the deal on Wednesday.

According to the player's agent Michael Coker, only minor details between both clubs need to be sorted out.

"I'm presently in Madrid now and everything is almost done," Coker told BBC Sport on Tuesday. "I have been in a long meeting with the club director [Jesus Pitarch], and they are excited knowing everything is almost sorted out.

"We had little challenges at some point but right now everything is back on track with the player and clubs involved."

The 25-year-old joined Olympique Marseille from Nigerian side Lobi Stars in 2004 and has been a regular at the club until last season. He won the French double with Marseille last season.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were also said to be interested in his services, despite Marseille president Jean Claude Dassier saying Taiwo will not leave.

Siasia wants fresh start for Eagles

New Nigeria coach in waiting, Samson Siasia, has suggested the Super Eagles begin from the scratch after a disastrous World Cup showing.

The Eagles finished bottom of their first round group in South Africa, and Siasia, who is expected to soon be named the country’s new coach, has asked for improvements in the Nigeria Premier League, longer training camps and the blooding of younger players into a new national team.

“A very strong Nigeria Premier League would actually solve the problem of lack of good players in the Super Eagles. We have to develop our league and depend more on our home-based players,” advocated Siasia.

“And from such a league pick players who we should have enough time to work on. These players have to be together for a longer period to be able to blend and play to the standard required at that level.

“They have to be camped together for say a minimum of one to two years. The reason is that we need to work on them physically, technically and mentally to a required standard. This would help them to be able to withstand pressure, among other things.”

Siasia also demanded for an injection of younger, glory-hungry players to the Eagles.

“We know the players who have not done well whether due to injuries or being too old. We are not saying they are bad players but maybe their time is over. We should know that everything in life has a life span, so we thank them for all they have done,” recommended Siasia.

“Right now we need to invite the players who can actually help us. I mean the ones who have age on their side. We need younger players who are very strong, talented, skilful, determined, hungry for success and ready to play.

“We need to get these young ones from the U- 17, U- 20 and U- 23 national teams and see how well we can work together to get a good team.”

Taiwo, just go to Atletico Madrid. Spanish football is more tactical and rugged than the easy-going English premiership. You will surely become a better player. The best players we have in our super eagles (Ike Uche, Kalu Uche, Osaze, Obasi) are not playing in the premiership so there is nothing to fear about.

Leonard: 2010-07-21 11:47

What a good news Taiwo! I want to see you in top form once again.Deschamps made his choice where as we all know that you are far better than Hainze. It's too late to cry, don't look back you did all you could for them. There you'll be closer to Morinho....who knows.

Austin: 2010-07-21 12:39

The Spanish league will be better suited for TT's style of play. The EPL will expose his slow recovery rate. And if you asked me, I would say that La Liga is where the future lies. EPL is soon taking the back seat.

Pls we dont want foreign coach any longer. I am not trying to say that Largerback is a bad coach. he is good, but the question is: Will he Live in Nigeria? We want only a coach who will stay at home and sought for skillfull and intelligent footballers.

We no longer want FIRE BRIGADE APROACH where by two weeks to any tournament the same foreign legs will come and play for us again.

NFF should not be so foolish to give Largerback a 4 year contract, because if they do so largerback will simply do the same as Beti Vogt and other Foreign coach whom after signing there long term contract, traveled back to there country untill 3 weeks to a tournament where they will apply there fire brigade aproach again.

NFF pls give SiaSia this Job He long ago merited and desaerved this position.

We know your individual intrest in prefaring a foreign coach but Pls dont start this coruption of having your sheer of a Foreign coachs monthly salary

The paramount king: 2010-07-21 13:33

Is Atletico Madrid really interested in signing TAIWO?
Published: July 21, 2010
allnigeriasoccer.com

The transfer of Taye Taiwo from M****ille is getting more complex by the day if we are to believe reports emanating from the French and Spanish media.According to French media reports,Atletico Madrid revalued Taiwo's transfer fee to € 5.5 million (from a previous € 4.5 million).
However, the information linking Taiwo with a move today to the Europa Cup winners appears very strange because highly authoritative Spanish Sports Dailies,Marca and AS announced in chorus that Atletico should formalize today the arrival of Luis Filipe from Deportivo La Coruna. And he is a left sided defender.A recruit who according to our sources would cost around €13.5 million. Suddenly, the Rojiblancos say they need Taye Taiwo?

Could it be possible that the Atletico coach,Quique Sanchez Flores, need three players at left back-Taye Taiwo,Luis Filipe and their club captain and Spanish International,Antonio Lopez? And these are all world class players.
It is really very legitimate to ask if Atletico Madrid are not fooling Taye Taiwo.Reports say Atletico Madrid played the Taiwo card to enable La Coruna release their player Luis Filipe. The mystery remains unsolved. We should know more in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, Taiwo is still a M****ille player.

We are waiting and watching the end of the drama.

Deportivo La Coruna accept Atletico Madrid offer for Luis Filipe:
21.07.10 | tribalfootball.com

Atletico Madrid have had a £10 million bid for Luis Filipe accepted by Deportivo La Coruna.
The Brazilian full-back is rated as one of the finest left-sided players in Spain and was a likely candidate to play in the position for his country at the World Cup in South Africa.
However, the 23-year-old broke his fibula against Athletic Bilbao in January and despite returning before the end of the season, Lyon's Michel Bastos was given the role.
Filipe, has made over 100 appearances for Deportivo, and will sign a four-year deal after undergoing a medical.
Depor are using the sale to pay off some of the debts they owe for other players.
"We believe there are only a few details left to be sorted out," Depor president Lendoiro said on arrival at a Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) meeting in Madrid.
"Until there is something signed, there is nothing we can say (officially), but let's say things are very advanced.
"I imagine he (Filipe) is already here (in Madrid). The idea I have is that he will have arrived (to finalise the move)."

So where does Taiwo fall in. Please kickoff get ur facts right before lifting up our spirits only to dash it later.
The puzzle is gradually fitting together.

Nigeria Falcons score against Mexico on the 16th minute. Orji is the hitwoman.

Eric: 2010-07-21 15:21

Female U-20 women world cup. Nigeria leading Mexico by one goal to nil. The girls are trying. I pray that they score more.

Marvel: 2010-07-21 15:51

Am falling in love with our No 7, Sunday (I guess), she is in the club of Kanu and Perpetua Nkwocha. I simply love her 'football sense'. She is an intelligent player. I hope the U 20 girls score more goals and win this match.

Kerewa: 2010-07-21 16:39

Its becoming interesting. Mexico has equalized and japan leading England wt 3 goals. Any slip up from the Nigerian team now means they are coming home.

kessy: 2010-07-21 16:45

Please where did Nigeria get this U20 women team coach from? What a dumb person. This is just one of the reasons our local coaches must not coach Super Eagles or else we all will continue developing high blood.

Kerewa: 2010-07-21 16:58

Its all over. But they will meet a very strong opposition in the quarterfinal. Either Korea or USA.

The girls really need to step up their game.

Eric: 2010-07-21 17:01

It is Nigeria 1-1 Mexico.
Both teams qualify for the quarter finals. Nigeria could have won the game but for some defensive blunders.

@kessy, stop suffering from inferiority complex. The coach might not be that good but certainly a white man cannot do better. The outplayed England, although they drew, they beat Japan. Those teams had white caoches. Coming to the SE, what miracle did Largerback do? Until we beleive in ourselves and look inwards, we might never get to eldorado in our football. I will use this opportunity to wellcome Siasia on board as he is set to reshape and remould our super eagles.

hami_truther: 2010-07-21 17:08

what do you think about the supereagles cut?

Austin: 2010-07-21 17:37

@Kessy, it would be very nice to share on this forum what you saw that we did not see. At least, let us in on your insights about what the coach failed to do. Your bland statement may not be too flattering for your image here.

Ugonna: 2010-07-21 22:43

@Kessy
Let me repeat your comment and reflect your level of mentality. You stated thus:

"Please where did Nigeria get this U20 women team coach from? What a dumb person. This is just one of the reasons our local coaches must not coach Super Eagles or else we all will continue developing high blood"

What about the swuiss coach that played against Ghana today, I guess you should as well say that this is one of the reason we should not use a Foreign coach,

try to use ur sences my friend
