Nigeria League sponsors Glo sees contract expire

NPL seeks new sponsors

Posted: 2010-07-20 22:45

A meeting of the executive committee of the Nigeria Premier League next Tuesday will decide on new title sponsorship for the League after contract renewal talks with Glo broke down in Lagos.

Glo’s four-year deal with the NPL lapsed at the end of the current season, and NPL sources say the company, which had the right of first refusal, failed to exercise those rights despite written reminders.

A meeting in Lagos on Tuesday failed to resolve pending issues, including outstanding sponsorship fee of over N900-million due to the League.

As a result, the board is expected to open bids for new title sponsorship when they meet next week in Abuja.

People should comment about the main topic and leave Lulu alone. as far as im concern Mr. Lulu arranged for the kidnapping of his mother to divert attention from the fraud allegation. hanging on him.

Who will now sponsor our dying professional league? where are all these generals that looted our country in the past? OBJ we need you. IBB we need you.

The league is not appealing enough as it is. We are still running an amateur league. ALL the clubs are owned by state govts. This will not augur well for the league, and no serious sponsor will show up. Privatize the league for serious changes! What value did GLO get from their last sponsorship of the league? Nothing! Let's start thinking now for a better tomorrow.

Let them swallow their pride and learn from other successful and proffessional leagues in Africa like Egyptian league; Tunisian League;Algerian League and most importantly RSA Premier league (one of the Top TEN Leagues in the World in terms of Revenue;Sponsoship and Marketing/Media coverage); State intervention and ownership of Clubs should be scrapped, the league should be run like a Company or Private Business with stakeholders. Nigeria has potential to succeed and do better. Good luck anyway.
