Cosmos to contest Ubuntu Derby

Jomo Cosmos will next Sunday play Zimbabwe side Highlanders at Johannesburg Stadium in a friendly international charity match that also aims to discourage xenophobia.

The Ubuntu Derby is arranged by such organizations as Southern Africa Women’s Institute for Migration Affairs, Action and Population Council and preparations are at an advanced stage.

“The match, being called the Ubuntu Derby, aims at bringing together all Africans in Africa. People from all walks of life are invited to celebrate their cultural richness, diversity, and most importantly to embrace their differences through soccer, drama, poetry music and traditional dances,” the organisers say in a statement released to KickOff.com.

“The event will also be graced by political and religious leaders in South Africa. The funds that will be raised through tickets sales will be channeled towards vulnerable children, skills development, and repatriation programmes.”

Great Idea. Bad team selection. only 20 spectator will pitch, although I would attend if I was living in Jo'Burg

I think you are ill-informed Kagiso. Jomo Cosmos is a big team besides playing in the lower tie despite having fewer supporters they are bound to attend the match. It is owned by one of the greatest figures in African football who has played alongside the great Pele. Has won a number of cups and is one of the few teams owned by a former pro when some of his peers wallow in poverty. On the other hand Highlanders is a big tem in terms of fan base and bigger than Pirates and the biggest team in zimbabwe despite the poor champions league record. Coming from the wrong part of the country where everything is from sports to politics is decided by the language one speaks. Grobeelaar, Mwaruwari, Peter Ndlovu, the Dream Team come from this team, go to Wikipedia. Finally not less than 30 000 will attend the match. The only problem is that they could be easy targets for the xenophobes.
