Nigeria suspected of WC match fixing

Posted: 2010-07-09 20:17

Fifa was warned before this year's World Cup of fears Nigeria's team could be vulnerable to match-fixing, BBC Newsnight has learned.

A Uefa investigator in South Africa raised concerns, including over betting patterns.

Nigeria went out of the tournament in the first round, losing to Greece.

In a statement to Newsnight, Fifa did not deny getting a warning but say they have "no indication" of match-fixing in any World Cup matches in South Africa.

Newsnight understands a member of Uefa's Disciplinary Services Unit – which is responsible for investigating match-fixing – first became suspicious during qualifying rounds of the World Cup and it is alleged that certain Nigerian players came forward and said their team was vulnerable to manipulation.

On the morning of Nigeria's first match, he alerted Fifa's new Early Warning System, set up to look for signs of match-rigging, of his concerns.

German journalist Christian Bergmann also had a call just before the first Nigerian game of the tournament from a Uefa contact, who said there were suggestions that "some players from the Nigerian team are actually involved in some form of manipulation".

In their second game of the tournament, Nigeria were strong favourites to beat Greece and took an early 1-0 lead.

But, after just 33 minutes, Nigeria had a man sent off and Greece scored their first-ever World Cup goals to win 2-1.

After their elimination, Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan was so angry with the team's poor performances that he suspended the whole team from international competition. He later reversed that decision following a complaint from Fifa.

Nigeria should have international sanctions thrown against then by the UNO. Why must Africa be brought down by this disgraceful nation. Why is it that most age cheating claims are against Nigerian teams? The reason is that there is blatant crookery going on and its been happening for years. Why should we Africans be tainted by this when it is almost 100% Nigeria.
My hatred hatred for Nigeria after this is almost uncontrollable. For me you are Satan's people!

This news is pure fabrication by BBC. They can never report anything good about Nigeria. There was no match-fixing involving Nigeria, the truth of the matter is that we went to the world cup with unfit players. If BCC is sure of this allegation let them name those certain Nigerian players they claimed that came forward and said their team was vulnerable to manipulation. BBC is full of lies, I have no respect for them because they don't balance their report when it concerns Nigeria.
What a junk journalism.

Clovis: 2010-07-09 21:51

Our players did not involve themselves in match-fixing but maybe somebody else did.

ajibola: 2010-07-09 22:11

@god may God punish you and your familiy for saying such things about Nigerians...not all nigerians are corrupt you cannot judge us becos of some corrupt individuals....ok in the case of south africa do yuou want us to judge all of you as HIV infested monkeys, rapists, crime addicts and serial killers........mark my words from today you shall suffer severely in the days to come cuz we have hardworking Nigerians who suffer everyday in order to become successfull i pray the spirits of those who have suffered with honesty in their hearts to punish your soul.......*******

Bibby: 2010-07-09 22:14

BBC should prove this blatant allegations by naming the players. NFF,NSC and Nig govt should follow this up to either clear the air or otherwise.
@ god, In ur winning U20 team, perhaps, just perhaps, Andre Ayew is the only within the age bracket. I live in Accra and know very well, Agyeman Badu, Latifu, Jonathan Mensah, Addy, Adyia, Osie Ransford & co, they are closer to their 30's than 20's. It's a common truth on the streets of Accra.
During a certain FIFA U17 tourney,Ismael Addo, spoke on radio & sent regards to his wife & children, "an U17". Go ahead & try to disclaim these & i will give you the real age of John Mensah, whose 1st child is already an undergraduate in Legon.

FIFA must b vry stupid togthr wt carrier and those who believes such story. How cn FIFA or Joseph whatevr, account 4 all human errors (FIFA' ERRORS) that jeopadize nations hope, effort and ambition? that rendered all resources useless, that caused both young and old tears like a child? That lead 2 death, high blood pressure, casualties and lost of jobs? Would u allow re-play of those matches,to correct ur errors? FIFA must b vry stupid 4 such acknowledgmemt. Nigeria refused intimidation of any form, nt even in word or action. Every country faces wt 1 challenge or d othr, and change is a constant thing. Those who hate U Nigeria shall b ur servant including there family member all d days of their lives, and those who wish u evil, evil shall nevr depart frm them. Those who wish u well, shall b well wt thm.

@ajibola, @god is actually Ghanain. The one question I have for himself and has fellow compatriots is why they don’t actually spend up to a quarter of the time they devote on KON on their own page.
To be honest with you, I won’t get stressed over none entities like him. As a matter of fact I am happy to see that people like him keep visiting our page. Like the old story goes: when you really like someone, you pretend you hate them. That’s why they can’t stop coming to KON.
I bet you @god spends most of his low wages on Nigerian films too.

tsaduma: 2010-07-09 22:36

These South African are so paranoid, they obviously see us (Nigerians) as their rival which by far a role they are too small to play. They forgot so soon that we educated most of their leaders here in Ibadan, Nigerians and bought motorcycles for them. Show some respect guys if you are now getting over your slavery. Nigeria are far too complex for your comprehension.

tsaduma: 2010-07-09 22:53

I think brazil fixed there match too against Netherland because a player got a red card and they consequently began losing possesions of the ball to Holand.

Pleas KON stop manufacturing lies on this site, i can see that since yesterday there have been no news. that should not be a reason to manufacture lies you said your information was from bbc but i have checked both on web site and TV and i saw no root of this nonsense you pasted here

tsaduma: 2010-07-09 23:01

@Mzakes another perfect example of this ingrate South Africans, he already concluded the world cup matches were fixed and obviously probably never watched the matches either. Eric: 2010-07-09 23:47

@Mzakes, what makes you think that every Nigerian that comments on this forum is based in your vuvuzela country? Mr man, most of us are all here in Nigeria enjoying our God given and blessed country. If your stomach can't take it, then go lay an egg!!

@God, I simply don't want to engage you in anyway. I guess you know that Ghanains troop to Nigeria in search of a means of living. 70% of the big businesses in Ghana are owned by Nigerians. A good example is the telecom giant glo. Keep rotting in your poverty infested country of Ghana.

"NIGERIA SUSPECTED OF WORLD CUP MATCH FIXING"

Who is suspecting Nigeria? Is it FIFA or The German Journalist or KON. When i first saw this topic i thought it was FIFA that was suspecting Nigeria, but i never knew it was a mere German journalist.

There are millions of journalist over the world but I donnt know this unknown strange brat fabricated by KON.

Pls KON your news is meaningless but only aimed at generating hate statements among Africans on this website. I beg every African brother on this forum to ignore this news and lets show to our selves that we are brothers. lets show love and not hatred lets show Apreciation for who we are. lets make positive contributions for one anothers country

ken gadaffi: 2010-07-10 05:54

But why so much ado about nothing? This report only stated that Nigeria was suspected for being vulnerable to match fixing but at the end it never came to be. I really don't know why KON brought up this report anyway or what they intended to achieve. How can Nigeria be suspected of match fixing in a group where Argentina, Greece and South Korea are? Do they mean Nigeria wanted to buy their match or sell their matches? This report lack substance and should utterly be ignored rather than being used to create more acrimony among Africans here.

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

ALL THIS ONES NA STORY::::::::

MY POINT IS THAT Anyansi Agwu Enyimba chieftain be allowed to manage NFF

Since that man took over enyimba... 2 caf chapms...6 League Crowns, 1 Africa super cup league crowns...2 fa cup... Now in the concluding round of Confed Cup...

As far as am concern despite being the highest paying clubside in Nigeria.. They are the best managed as any average player or coach going there will easily key into the suscess because of the structure he has put in place... what could ikanna and emordi achieve after leaving them ... NOTHING

All funds from government was well managed by him to produce result...

Other government did the same to their teams yet nothing showed for it(e.g Lagos :the richest state)

pls i don't want to see any foreign coach here:

A Nigeria coach met us after
(1)quarter final exit from last ANC by a white man ... WON Bronze next

(2)After the white failed to qualify for 2006.qualified us for the next SA2010

(3)Met us 36th on FIFA ranking left by a white man...Was sacked after
taking us to 15th place on the ranking.

Now the white man has returned us to 40th on the rankings:

PLS BRING IN Anyansi Agwu and SIASIA OR KESHI.....

I BETTER STRUGLE WITH MY LOCAL COACH THAN GET HIGH BLOOD BY A WHITE MAN...

KAI!!!LAGERBACK!!!! BEST MISS IN WORLD CUP HISTORY

Damn im nt surprised! Theze nigerians again.

oscar : 2010-07-10 07:15

Rather than waste time suspecting Nigeria of match fixing, I will advice FIFA or UEFA to use their precious time to investigate the referees for match-fixing and or match rigging. Some decisions they have taken so far has really cast huge doubt on their (some of them) credibility and that of FIFA to conduct "free and fair" World cup. What a shame these referees and match officials are. Just like in tennis, coaches should have one or two or even 5 chances to call for a replay of events within the duration of a match. I do not care if it will slow-down the matches, at least it will bring justice to the games.

As for FIFA and the golden ball award, what the hell is Messi doing in that list? There are over 10 players that played better than Messi, is that justice by FIFA? This is cheating and FIFA has no right to accuse any country of cheating. Messi was either an average player or below-average player at this world cup.

bernard: 2010-07-10 10:09

oh my God.i cannot doubt this. But if it true that there was really a match fixing for the games they played, then the entire squad should be banned.I am also of the view that the new NFF be made up of ex internationals.Look at Ghana,ABEDI PELE is fully involved in football in Ghana and that is why they did so well at the world cup.Look at ZAMBIA,they have KALUSHA BWALYA running the show in Zambia.Lulu,Ogunjobi and whatever his name is were all there to enrich their pockets with money. They are bunch of thieves and deserve to be severely punished if they find any irregularities.OH MY GOD,THIS PEOPLE WILL KILL US.

From this post I can conclude that majority of South Africans are idiot, fools and useless fellow.Ifnot I think one reasonable person among them should have post a comment advising those fools who have been saying rubbish but rather none of them is sensible to do that which point to the fact that they are monkies who don't have self pride nor dignity.

Guys I implore you to ignore their bad comments and move on with normal life. People with HIV and other bad act is that not more than corruption or what is the cause of such affliction if not rape and other things. Is rape normal thing in life?I can see it is an acceptable thing in SA litle wonder they still brag with it.Foolish men and women.I hope u guys realise that these white guys are going to take you back to your old dark days soon just be informed that we will not invest anything to rescue you that point in time. They are waiting for the demise of the only sensible SA(Mandela) to deal with you fools.

@Mzakes,Nigeria is one of the most richest country in Africa,They dont need BILL CLINTON, SEPP BLATTER, ZINEDANE ZIDANE, KOFI ANNAN or OPRAH in their country.Remember these aboved mentioned names come to SA to help the poor.Have you seen any organisation that come to nigeria to help?Nigeria is living to the world expectations and also remember again that help goes to where poverty is thats why you see people like Oprah, clinton and others all the time in SOWETO.

tsaduma: 2010-07-10 19:16

@Mzakes; I already advised you to free yourself of your corrupted mind. Listens to those two mentors of yours (they are your mentors and not someone you go well with. The fantasies going on in your mind will only lead you to perdition, Nigerians do not see South Africans in the same league as themselves, look for your equal to engage and you need no look further than your neighbours.

tsaduma: 2010-07-10 19:32

@Mzakes: Why do you assume Nigerians are interested in coming to South Africa? Just like Apiripah educated you, have you ever seen any of this aids organisation in Nigeria, never, ‘because we don’t need them. The aids organisation knows where they are needed and that’s why they go to South Africa, even though, we have as usual been dignified in our relationship with South Africa, we do have a legitimate claim to that country. It is our money, blood, tears that freed our land (South Africa) and it is ours. We will not live it to the Boers as the Bushmen have shown they will only pander to the Boers.

The Extra-Ordinary General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation was held yesterday with 84 members in attendance. In a communiqué released at the end of the congress and signed by the Chairman, Communiqué Drafting Committee, Amaju Pinnick, the earlier date of August 21, 2010, was upheld as the day for elections into the new Executive Committee of the NFF while the recent changes in the leadership of the body was ratified.

The congress also approved an extension of two weeks for the collection and return of completed election forms. This, according to the communiqué, was to give all interested stakeholders the opportunity to participate in the elections.

The congress commended President Goodluck Jonathan for intervening in the recent crisis that threatened football activities in the country. On the bribery allegation levied against the state FA chairmen, the communiqué agreed on by the congress, which was attended by Sports Commission Chairman, Ibrahim Bio, represented by the Director-General of the commission, Patrick Ekeji, said there was no truth in it.

”The congress noted with satisfaction the submission of the NFF Executive Committee that there is no iota of truth in the allegation that State FAs were each bribed with the sum of N5 million. The congress also agreed that members of the Executive Committee are to be elected by the respective Zonal delegates, but on the floor of the General Assembly.”

The congress also reiterated its commitment to the principles of transparency, honesty and due process, and fully endorsed the recent changes in the leadership by the Executive Committee of the Federation. There was an overwhelming vote to ratify the dismissals and the interim leadership of the NFF.

Hey, those nigerians responding to the south africans here are the ones encouraging them and simply makes you guys to be in the same level. WHy dont u simply ignore them and move on with other things. Little wonder most objective forumites deserted here today. I have a feeling that even those responding as nigerians might even be south africans talking to themselves.

It was Bantu Biko who said "the oppressor's great weapon is the mind of the oppressed" as I am reading some of the comments here, the virile spewed here makes me believe black people will never recover from the ravages of colonialism. Some countries were liberated a half century ago and one hope those would be torch bearers for nascent democracies in all aspects, but it is not the case.We africans need to look ourselves in the mirror.I get stomach cramps everytime a white man is glorified for a black man's success."AFRICA YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN'

The people that are talking about match fixing between nigerains i can say that they are just kidding because the nigerians needed this world cup more than any other country in that tournamant.
Simply we lost because we did not play well and you don't expect to win matches without playing good football, being afraid of your opponent will never make to win match although you can respect your opponent but not being scared of him.

We have to learn from our lessons now and join hands together for the slogan is TOGETHER WE ARE THE POWER OF 9JA.

Having gone through all these comments, I feel ashamed that we cannot be united in Africa. Chain Gang, I was very impressed with your initial comment but disappointed with the follow-up. You have been a contributor in kickoffnigeria and I believe that you should know better. The second comment to this story was from a Ghanaian and he was rather sarcastic. I bet it that this report is far from the truth. Then comes the battle between Chokehold and Mzakes. If you want to be truthful, most regular forumites abstain from commenting when it became a duel between the two. South Africa has done a good job hosting the world cup and a lot of people are getting to believe that South Africa is not as bad as being painted. Any xenophobic attack on Nigerians after this world cup will just undo all the good that should come from the world cup. I am disappointed that some people could be rooting for such callous act. I will continue to insist that Africans are their greatest problems. How many Nigerians are in South Africa that have made some South Africans so uncomfortable? There cannot be as many Nigerians in South Africa as there are in UK or US and I have been astonished at the reception I have got from people in the states despite the bad news from Nigeria all the time. Why? They understand that everybody cannot be bad. I will advise for unity rather than the division being canvassed now. Soccer should be a tool to unite nations and not a means to cause problems.

Mozesky: 2010-07-12 13:04

This is no news but rather a cook-up by the editor of KO in order to get views and reaction from people. Nigeria has always been known/associated for bad things, why do you want to rub it in the more????

ibeopara: 2010-07-12 13:27

hey kickoff, did you actually remove all that was written by chokehold and
left those written by Mzakes?,I want to be proven wrong but if
otherwise then Mzakes must be a staff of kickoff sa employed to insult
Nigerians rather than discuss soccer and related issues.

ibeopara: 2010-07-12 13:45

mzakes & chokehold are highly bereaved of soccer ideas and I suggest they
look elsewhere for junks and leave soccer loving people
to discuss soccer. I believe in healthy rivalry and it should not be
mixed up with unnecessary antagonism & bickering planted in Africans by the western world, kick off should play fair to stop it.

Barring last minute hitches, the new leadership of the Nigeria
Football Federation will announce the appointment of a new coach for the senior national team, the Super Eagles and the lucky man is no other person than the former U-23 chief coach, Samson Siasia.

Trustsports gathered exclusively yesterday that the former international was picked ahead of other coaches who showed interest in taking over from Lars Lagerback because he is the man Nigerians want for the job.

According to the NFF technical committee member who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Nigeria Football Federation is not bigger than the whole country and so if it is Siasia that the country wants for Eagles job, then the wish of Nigerians must be obeyed.

He said beside the wishes of Nigerians, the technical committee settled for Siasia because he has demonstrated the requisite ability to identify good players as he showed his stuff when he was in charge of the U-23 and later U20 national teams.

"We have settled for Siasia because he is the one that Nigerians want and since we are not bigger than the whole country, we have decided to do the wish of Nigerians. It is not a hidden fact that Siasia is loved by Nigerian football fans and there is no iota of doubt that he has what is needed to do this job.

"Moreover, we are embarking on a re-building process and the best man for the job is Siasia. He is known for discovering talent and this is the most reason why we have settled for him", he stated.

In addition, the NFF bigwig disclosed that Siasia has been contacted and is pleased with the offer as he has already expressed readiness to accept the offer.
He said: "We have been discussing with Siasia and he has agreed to coach Eagles. This is a rare opportunity and I am sure he will not have any reason to think twice before taking this offer. He is patriotic and this is a national call which he will surely be glad with".

In a related development, he revealed that Austin Eguaveon will be appointed the chief coach of the national U-23 team.

He said the former international has accepted the offer and is certainly pleased with it.

The member of NFF Executive Committee said a meeting will be held today between the technical committee and the two coaches to finalize discussions after which their appointments will be made public.
