Enyimba knocking on history's door

Enyimba are on the cusp of becoming the most successful side in Nigerian football history, if they can get past title rivals Kano Pillars on Wednesday at the Enyimba Stadium.

The Peoples Elephants are one point clear of Pillars going into Wednesday's big season finale, and a result against the northern aristocrats will hand them their sixth domestic title, level with Rangers and one ahead of Shooting Stars.

But their two CAF Champions League triumphs will give them the edge over the Flying Antelopes.

It will be the first time in recent memory that the two clubs in direct contention for the title go head to head, but Enyimba have more at stake than just any title win and their players are well aware, according to Media Officer Tonnex Chukwu.

"The players are very aware of what they are about to achieve, and we are all feeling it," he told KickOffNigeria.com. "It is not every day that a team stands on the doorstep of history."

But he insists that there is calm within the dressing room.

"They are all very relaxed, like for any normal League match. Of course this is not any normal league game, but our approach and our preparations have not changed.

"It is still the same way we prepare for any game that we have prepared for this one and the players know that they have something important in front of them."

Pillars are on the hunt for only their second title, the first having come only in 2008, but Media Officer Malikawa Idris is confident they can derail Enyimba's history-chasing ambitions.

"They are not better than us, and it doesnt matter whether they are playing at home or not. I dont see us losing in Aba," he said.

On Tuesday, the Enyimba players were paid the remainder of their sign-on fees, a key motivation for players in the Nigerian league and Chukwu says losing is not an option.

"We know we only need a draw to win the title, but we are not playing for a draw. Enyimba have never lost a championship match in Aba, and we are not about to start now."

The game kicks off at 16h00 Nigerian time and will be live on SuperSport 9 Channel 209.

Enyinba management has shown the way a professional club should go and this has been the secret of their successes in recent time. I do hope other clubs will take cue from them and get down to really make the local league professional rather than the Quasi professional it currently is.
Enyinba and Kano Pillars are both chasing History, may the better side triumph. Good luck

Such title chasing duels increases the competitiveness of the home based players. They learn how to handle pressure in big matches. We don't have so many professionals who are involved in matches of such magnitude.

Yet, we chide them FOR QUACK PLAYERS LIKE YAKUBU.

In the words of Stanley, ''God indeed, no dey sleep''

The highest goal scorer in the Nigerian league just got past the 17 (or is it 18?)goals record! That tells us much about the quality of our league and the players. I often watch league matches on SS and lose interest after only a few minutes. I have had to endure whole matches purely becaue of interest. The revolution in our football must extend to the league. State govts. must offer the team up for public participation by giving public offers and retaining only a non-controlling amount shares. That way the teams will not be used for political patronage and conduits of siphoning public funds. Business men will will invest in the teams and run them as businesses. The players will be treated as assets and will be better treated as obtains elsewhere. True professionalism will endue. The fans will have a stake and the "Iwururu" results that we have will be a thing of the past. Whichever team wins should be happy, but I am not impressed.

Its nearly Half time at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba and Enyimba lead 1-0 through Osas Idehen

Editor: 2010-07-07 17:55

Reports I am getting say #KanoPillars are playing very well. Idehen's goal came in the 36th minute

@Austin, I agree with your comments. However, I'll disagree to invest my money into any Nigerian clubside especially in buying of shares cos' you cannot bet the successful clubsides today will not be disbanded tommorrow. Pls, ask friends who invested heavily in transcorp during the OBJ era and they'll tell u regretful stories.
