Eugene Salami equals Nigeria league record

Salami equals league record

Posted: 2010-06-14 11:40

With all eyes on Ahmed Musa, Niger Tornadoes striker Eugene Salami has stolen past the Kano Pillars man to become the second player after Akarandut Orok to equal Ishaya Jatau's 17-goal league scoring record.

Salami was on target in Tornadoes' 1-2 defeat to Shooting Stars at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan.
Going into the weekend's games, the Tornadoes man was tied at 16 goals with Musa, but his consolation for the Minna side may not have won any points, but proved enough to put his name in the record books.

Despite hitting the landmark, the forward told the Premier League Official website npl.com.ng that his primary concern was helping Tornadoes do well, rather than chase the top scorer’s award.

"Anything can happen in football. I am not saying that I won't like to win the highest goal scorer's award, but my main concern is to play for my club and make sure that we do well in the league.

"But since I have the chance to win something for myself I will not mind and I will not allow it affect the target of the club," Salami said.

And with three games left to play in the season, Salami now has a chance to set a new record.

@tranquil, Right before the start of the world cup, I have FAITH that the eagles will make it to the next round on 6 points. We are still on course. Contrary to wide held believe that Argentina would demolish the SE, I am glad that Nigeria held their own. My only regret was that, the argentina side i saw on saturday where there for the taking but we simply let them off the hook ( Maradona attested to that). Nonetheless, It is still in our hands now. If we can win Greece with at least 2 goals, then it will be a winner take all against Korea which certainly is possible. However, a note of caution, I am worried by the way Nigerians took the result of the 1-0 loss and hope it doesn't go into the heads of the players and think that Greece will be a mince meat. There should be only one thing in the eagles mind, throw caution to the wind from the onset and ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK. Once again, we will need an earliy goal to calm nerves and unsettle Greece. I see us scoring in the first 20 minutes. If we cannot score, then we must do everything not to concede within that duration. The Eagles of today have not been showing the character of a team than can come from behind, so let us avoid that situation come thursday.
