Argentina coach Diego Maradona

Three defenders for Maradona

Maradona puts three at back for Argentina

Argentina coach Diego Maradona is set to take a risk by playing a three-man backline with Jonas Gutierrez at the heart in Saturday's World Cup opener against Nigeria in Johannesburg.

Maradona was keeping his exact plans for the match at Ellis Park under lock and key on Wednesday at the team's Pretoria headquarters, but the signs were that certain elements were already in place.   "Jonas has been around the block and he is used to going out wide and we know we are three out-and-out defenders so that means the coach will be looking for a lot of marking," said Marseille centre-half Gabriel Heinze.   Heinze's comment was as near as either he or teammate Mario Bolatti of Fiorentina got to giving details of the Argentina game plan as they seek to dominate Group B with matches against South Korea and Greece to come.   But the rumours flying around the camp are Maradona will play a 3-4-3 formation.   Heinze will be backed up by Walter Samuel of Inter Milan and Martin Demichelis of Bayern Munich may be shunted out further right than usual with Newcastle's Gutierrez overseeing part of his normal zonal duties.   But Heinze also said that "Argentina will always go after the game" and not sit tight and be ultra-cautious.   The attack will likely comprise Carlos Tevez as a third forward complementing Gonzalo Higuan and Lionel Messi, of whom so much is expected at this tournament.   Samuel says the team is ready to hit the ground running, despite poor qualifying form.   "I have confidence in this team's chances at this World Cup," insisted the defender.   The Nigerians have not shown the greatest of form coming in - they beat fellow World Cup qualifiers North Korea 3-1 at the weekend in an encounter overshadowed by a crowd stampede but previous encounters saw a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia and a 1-1 stalemate with Colombia.   Nevertheless Heinze says the Argentines should beware as "they are a strong and direct outfit" under experienced Swedish coach Lars Lagerback.   "They are very athletic and physically strong - and they have some quick players."

Without being ridiculous, I honestly dont see Nigeria beating this Argentina team on Saturday. Le Albacete are having their best team in so many years, with Messi dictating things upfront. Can someone tell me, who in the Nigerian team can contain that boy? Yeah right, no one!!!

Bafana have to be prepared, we may be heading for Argentinians should we get to the last 16. Well I also think Nigeria may get second sport in their group, they must try for a respective score however against Argentina and make sure they defeat Sweden and Korea they will definitely get 6 points and play Group A winners, probably South Africa or Uruguay.

Wow what a formation. I said it earlier El Diego will want to maximize the strong point of his team and that's the attack. He will want to keep SE back line busy. But i pray Lars, If this will actually be the formation, Let him opt for 4-4-2 or to be more cautious 4-5-1. with a quick player upfront. With this, we can soak the pressure and pray to catch them in a quick counter. Whoever will link the defense and the attack must be on top of his game. I have the feeling that they will play into Lars hands with this formation. 3 slow defenders at the back line????? Oh how i wish that TJ was in this team, he will make the stuff look simple. Get a quick counter, open them from the wings and gaps will be everywhere in the center of the defence. Martins, Osaze, Kalu uche, pls skin them alive for me.
The God of soccer is toying with El diego mind.

Any play in the SUPER EAGLES can hold Messi. It is a game of 11 each side. We don't fear anybody. After all, Agentina knows that we are not minor any day any time. I hope our player will approach evey game with big heart and determination to maintain the expectation of our fans.

God is with us.

@Kaizer7, did you watch u-20 world cup final in Holland 2005 and Olympics final 2008 in China? Was your freaking Messi not blunted out? Go do your soccer lessons, Bruv! The same players in the Super Eagles have played Messi twice and he didn't do a f-u-c-k!! Got it Mr Motormouth!

Messi is 100time the player he was in 2005, we'll see those guys who played against him those years, how they have developed! just one thing, please Joseph and you crew, dont let us down, this is an African world cup, if Nigeria loose this game by a big margin, it will demoralise the other African nations, can we see all five in the last 16?

The FEAR of Argentina is the beginning of WISDOM for SE.

If we are to get anything reasonable in this match, the SE must be in their best form especially in the defence and attack, we must be very sharp and quick in these departments.

With the above in place, it's promising to be a good game.

I think Argentina is already afraid of this match.look at how the coach (Maradona)is rotating his squad at this point when Lars Largerback already have his starting eleven. This will be the greatest upset in world cup history. With all the stars they have,Nigeria will still triumph against Argentina .

Prediction
NIG 2...ARG 0
Go Super Eagles Go.Africa is Behind u.
Pirates is not 1 skipper team or Gayser Chiefs aka Family Business FC

Niger Delta is playing kaak. I heard Kanu is starting as a lone striker. nx. I think Nigerians are currently specialising in drugs and guns, because oil is under the rebels and soccer under mediocrity.
