Kaita wins Lagerback praise

Sani Kaita wins Lars Lagerback praise

Posted: 31 May 2010 Time: 11:30 am

Sani Kaita earned glowing praise from Nigeria boss Lars Lagerback after excelling in an unusual right wing position in the Super Eagles 1-1 draw against Colombia on Sunday night.

Kaita was deployed on the right wing by and was largely instrumental in maintaining team shape and balance despite being a natural defensive midfielder.

It was a display that left Lagerback impressed.

"He was my man of the match," the Swede said. "He was absolutely outstanding and I think he was miles ahead of everybody."

Lars, was however, less pleased with the manner of the Super Eagles giving up a 12th minute goal to Carlos Valdes.

"It is a calamity when a player loses a 1v1. I was not happy with the goal, but we have to work harder on that."

Overall though, the Swede was happy to see improvements.

"This is a big improvement from the last game. I have only trained this team for seven times, and they have shown good quality.

"I think they will improve more, and the team will do better when they play more."

Lagerback will name his final 23-man squad later on Monday.

I congratulate Kaita and believe his impressive display will earn him a place in the Eagles list. We should not be satisfied with playing draws or fringe improvements on our last game. A good team is based on consistency and result! So far, the Eagles has not produced any winning result with 12days left to the WC and some forumites are already singing praises of the coach and tired players!!

Ha Ha Ha...

I thought some dudes say Kaita was horrible and wont make the final cut?

I was clearly impressed yesterday by Sanni's quality, both defensively and upfront!

However, i am deeply worried about our LFB positon where we seem stuck with Taiwo, who is calamitous in defense and the boyish Echejiele. Taiwo seems to be getting worse defensively and his lapses gave Adeleye plenty of covering up to do. Most of the Colombian attack came from his postion and the ease at which skillful, fast forward cuts through him is truly disturbing. God help us when he squares up against Messi or Aguero. I personally feel Lagerback should have tried out Kaita or even Ayila in the LFB position in one of the friendlies....

Kanu cannot boast that the SE he captains today is what it used to be years ago when he was handed the skippers band by Okocha whose footsteps he should have followed in retirement. Going to the World cup is not any players birth right, it’s a bad precedence and must be discouraged.

Kanu has featured in six editions of the Africa Cup of Nations but he never scored any goal! It's time we tell the truth on this forum!! The value we place on our team at the WC must supersede any parochial or idolatrous interest inadvertently placed on any single player (in this case, Kanu – with all respect). This is consequential when it comes to competitive fight for shirts among aggressively motivated players who would provide better options in the field rather than depend on tired cum rusty legs which refuse to retire cos’ of the thirst for dollars.

Under Kanu’s leadership as the SE skipper, our darling team has failed to impress soccer pundits and live up to the lofty potentials expected of the team in recent times. Although, under coach Amodu, the SE did their best to qualify for the WC but Kanu may not be given any tribute (save against Kenya) for any of those qualifications cos’ being included in the team was more gratuitous than meritorious.

When we allow the love and respect we have for any player a la Kanu to becloud our sense of objectivity then our aggressive quest to achieve set goals could be called to question even people with rational minds will query our sincerity. We don’t sell the pride of our nation on the altar of sentimentalism. Let’s rise above our emotions and feelings and join in the call for Kanu to stay away from the WC.

@ Billion ... At least we all saw the added technical input of Lars and the overall improvement in the team. Plus we were all far from having HEART ATTACK watching SE play.

Kaita's role was to keep possession on the right flank and he did just that, who thought he could have played well in that position? It was Lars tactical brilliance and nothing else.

In all my fingers are still crossed because the statistics don't look impressive with just 2 draws, hopefully it'll be a good beginning.

@Billion you should hide your face in shame, between kanu and Amodu who was the manager of the team?
Instead of putting the blame on your lazy Amodu who always sit on the bench to chew cola when other coaches are chewing gum.
Just look at Amodu's face do he look like a sports man? the answer is capital NO, rather he look like an egbe wedger, benin agboro, bob izua boy. if he is a coach let Insurance of Benin or Bendel United sign him, you call yourself Billion yet you don't have a cent upstairs. Kanu will ever remain as one of the best players ever to fly out on the green and white shirt of Nigeria, if you don't know much about his achievements you ask your elders.

I was one of the people that Criticized Kaita Yesterday cos i felt he was not intelligent on the ball anuff ,often got confused when he had the ball with 2 players on Him,i also felt he didnt understand some tricky moves with Odia(Thats what i think personally)
But Hey the coach has spoken. Him and only him(Lars)Knows what he told him to play, him and only him knows if Kaita stuck to instructions, was not there so i cant judge Lars assessment on him.But personally i didnt like him on the Ball.
