Safa defends Benni McCarthy

Posted: 20 May 2010 Time: 09:55 am

Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe has leapt to Benni McCarthy's defence after the striker snubbed the media on Tuesday.

McCarthy was apparently not in the right frame of mind to speak to the media at the team's hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, after Globoesporte.com quoted Bafana physical trainer Francisco Gonzalez saying, "McCarthy's percentage body fat is high. And his physical state is inferior to the rest of his team."   The West Ham United striker was widely condemned for the snub leading to Sedibe taking a swipe at the media for the "harsh" treatment meted out to Bafana's leading scorer of all time.   _quote "To call someone fat and use old pictures of him is just unfair," said Sedibe at the Safa house.   "He was in high spirits when he arrived in South Africa last week and said he was looking forward to helping the country do well in the tournament. But that was all crushed. I have to come to his defence on this issue," said Sedibe.   Sedibe further said he was not "condoning" McCarthy's failure to honour his media commitment.   "I believe the criticism is too harsh. Benni had personal problems to deal with and that was the reason he gave us for not attending the media briefing. He has stressed to me that he is fully committed to helping his country at the World Cup," Sedibe added.

Benni deserve all this negative publicity. He snubbed his country, chose games wen we needed his services to help us qualify for AFCON. Hope u remain fat and unfit. Give Killer Mphela, B Parker and Teko Modise a chance to be national symbols. My friends Crack and Sun will agree with me on this one, ha ha ha...

Modise is better than Pienaar,Bennie and Shabba Combined

In 3 yrs or less than that Modise as an attacking midfield has been in the Bafana set up he has created so many goals both Peinar and Tshabala had in their entire Bafana career. He also scored more goals than both combined. So logic dictates that in all fairness he is doing well for himself and NOT compared to anyone!!! wether we like him or not, the boy is naturally gifted. . ."I am intending to continue that record of winning games as captain on Monday against Bulgaria" - Teko Modise. shapa Modise shapaaaaa!!

Thanx Chisto point taken, Heish! I think the media went too far with the issue, and as much as celebrities need to understand the challenges that comes with fame sometimes the media play the man than the ball.

Let's build our own guys and shelve this negativism, especially destroying the soldiers we have for the upcoming battle. I want to advise SA public to learn from countries such as Brazil, England, Italy. You rarely find them discouraging or breaking their players when they experience a dry spell. Look at how professionaly Dunga handled Ronaldinho's case. England's coach selected Joe Cole in his provisional squad, even though he had limited game time in his club but the media and the public remain supportive.

What experience are you talking about my brother from another mother?Bennie was good only in 1998 NOT NOW,he is too lazy.He will be nowhere after the world cup,if you need him ask him to play for your team - Mokgapeng all stars not Bafana bafana.

Bennie must be dropped now b4 it's too late, there are plenty experienced players in our team.Else he must be brought in when we lead by 4 goals to nill.Shuu!that can only happen when Jesus comes back.

Soccer critic, you have to come to your senses or ask for help soon before its too late. Modise scoring more goals than Benni. As for Shabba and Pienaar I leave it for it is football politics in your head. How can one score goals whilst not available? I mean Benni was not regular in the team for that period you took for different reasons, so they cannot be compared. Anyway back to the topic, I think OUR media makes a meal out of nothing. If the Bafana trainer thought so of Benni, why did he agree when he was selected because I think he should tell as to who can be at the required shape at what time. Or he is just a "YESMAN" in the technical team. Is he committed to the country's goal of performing well in the tourney? Otherwise Benni's experience is vital at this point. Jokes and hatred aside. Everybody is required to rally behind the team. Being players, technical team, SAFA, PSL and supporters alike. Do your part guys and be behind Bafana.

News24 website rewrote the Kick Off story from the other day and used a photo of Benni when he was here in November 2009 when he looked overweight. By adding a photo like that to the story is poor journalism as the photo was used to sensationalize the story. Why do they not use new photos like Kick Off have been doing?
That journalist/web editor should be fired!

The world cup is not a place for ball joggler's & ball throwers or runners & ball passers. It is a place for proven talents & hungry goal poachers like Benni.Benni should be at the world cup at any cost if he is injury free or the sad reality of stage freight might creep in with disastrous consequences for the entire squad....Remember mates, there is no second opportunity if Bafana fails here...
