Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe has leapt to Benni McCarthy's defence after the striker snubbed the media on Tuesday.
McCarthy was apparently not in the right frame of mind to speak to the media at the team's hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, after Globoesporte.com quoted Bafana physical trainer Francisco Gonzalez saying, "McCarthy's percentage body fat is high. And his physical state is inferior to the rest of his team." The West Ham United striker was widely condemned for the snub leading to Sedibe taking a swipe at the media for the "harsh" treatment meted out to Bafana's leading scorer of all time. _quote "To call someone fat and use old pictures of him is just unfair," said Sedibe at the Safa house. "He was in high spirits when he arrived in South Africa last week and said he was looking forward to helping the country do well in the tournament. But that was all crushed. I have to come to his defence on this issue," said Sedibe. Sedibe further said he was not "condoning" McCarthy's failure to honour his media commitment. "I believe the criticism is too harsh. Benni had personal problems to deal with and that was the reason he gave us for not attending the media briefing. He has stressed to me that he is fully committed to helping his country at the World Cup," Sedibe added.
