All The Preliminary World Cup Squads

Posted: 2010-05-12 10:52

Here they are … 32 national squads comprising almost a 900 players heading for the first World Cup in Africa.

Coaches still have time to fine-tune their line-up, with June 1 being Fifa’s closing date for the final 23 players from each country that will be registered to play.

There were lots of big names not called up: No Ronaldinho or Pato for Brazil. Karim Benzema and Patrick Vieira out of the Tricolors. Juan Roman Riquelme, Zanetti and Cambiasso left out by Maradona too. Totti didn’t get the call for Italy either!

Diego Maradona has surprisingly omitted Esteban Cambiasso, Javier Zanetti and Fernando Gago from his preliminary 30-man Argentina World Cup squad.

Inter Milan midfielder Cambiasso has helped his club to the UEFA Champions League final and the brink of Serie A glory this season while his team-mate Zanetti possesses 136 caps and is a veteran of two World Cups.

Real Madrid's holding midfielder Gago was also a notable absentee along with M****ille's talented midfielder Lucho Gonzalez and Barcelona defender Gabriel Milito.

However, Liverpool's Maxi Rodriguez, whom Maradona appeared to have discarded altogether, is back along with Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini.

Surprise
There are a number of surprise inclusions by Maradona, including Ariel Garce, Juan Manuel Insaurralde, Clemente Rodriguez and Colon keeper Diego Pozo, who all play their club football domestically.

Argentina fancy their chances of taking the world by storm this summer due to Lionel Messi's brilliance and Maradona wants to give the talent a free role in South Africa.

"I don't want him stationed on the (right touch) line...All the ***** have to pass through him," Maradona told Fox Sports.

"I'm going to defend with four centre-backs, but I'm also going to have full-backs available in case we need to improve coming out of defence."

Argentina's preliminary 30-man squad:

Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andujar (Catania), Diego Pozo (Colon)

Defenders: Nicolas Otamendi (Velez Sarsfield), Martin Demichelis (Bayern Munich), Walter Samuel (Inter Milan), Gabriel Heinze (M****ille), Nicolas Burdisso (Roma), Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle), Ariel Garce (Colon), Juan Insaurralde (Newell's Old Boys), Clemente Rodriguez (Estudiantes)

Midfielders: Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle), Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes), Jose Sosa (Estudiantes), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Javier Pastore (Palermo), Sebastian Blanco (L****), Maxi Rodriguez (Liverpool), Juan Mercier (Argentinos), Jesus Datolo (Olympiakos), Mario Bolatti (Fiorentina)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Diego Milito (Inter Milan), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Martin Palermo (Boca Juniors), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli).

No big deal,no team work. 9ja 4 knockout stages. Can someone out there say uuhu ...uuhuuu...?

I think maradona has shot himself on the foot by not picking estaban cambiaso and zanetti...anyways ,who's the better for it..of course ,your guess is as good as mine..
My pick for Nigeria
Goalkeepers:enyeama, aiyenugba, ejide(some of us forgot that this is WC,not wafu;shorumu was unattached b/f 2002 WC..yet he proved our savior against the argies..if not it would have been basket of goals...experience and exposure is what counts here)
Defenders:yobo,odiah,taiwo,apam,afolabi,echiejile,adeleye,
Midfield:mikel,lukman,kanu,kalu,etuhu,(ayila/kaita...coach na you sabi,in this case i wish not be in your shoes..abeg)
Forwards:martins+odemwigie+uche=(MoU),obasi,anichebe,nsofor,p.utaka.

Sarah: 2010-05-12 13:28

Can you image there's only Centurion as the Fan Feast and Soshanguvhe and Temba as the viewing parks in Pretoria for 2010 Fifa SWC? So few for so much......... Just look for joburg's. They're on all the townships and suburbs proving the fact that Joburg is the footballing capital.

@Okey, yes scary going forward. But the backline is suspect. Ve watched all in their league games. Their recovery rate is very slow. mascherano and co will have a lot of covering to do. I bet u if diego plays messi the same way he plays in barca, it will cut Largerbacks work down a bit. Keep 2 quick guys in the wings. the work is done. Get past heinze,

I dont see Argentina terrorizing us this time.
Diego cannot play, tevez, messi and higuain same time.
Largerbeer the goose has come to roost.

i rest my case

Mac: 2010-05-12 17:28

@Dozie.Don't you think its more dangerous if higuain or tevez comes in during second half for damaging?
@Sarah.Mikel specializes on defensive midfield not attacking.Haruna got that position.

Mac,China.

my biggest surprise is eneramo. the guy suppose to be at this wc.

utuhmaster: 2010-05-14 01:01

The squads are quite good enough, except some suprises from Argentina,France,Brazil & some other countries.Nigeria squad is partially accoladable, because the 14 names erased from the squad are not justified, but all in all the invited ones should go & fight for their place, inorder to make the final list.Oncemore GO NIGERIA 2010 WC get the trophies.

utuhmaster: 2010-05-14 01:13

I'm not here to write names of those to be invited or not to be invited, but the truth is that, those of them,at the helm of the authority should do the right thing by inviting qualified & merited players,so that we the fans,we give you guys the whole support needed, remember that:IF GOLD RUST WHAT WILL IRON DO?
