The PSL's plans to unveil Soccer City Stadium to the world next month promises to be a massive bonus to two local clubs and their players.
League CEO Kjetil Siem has disclosed that they are negotiating with European, US and Asian broadcasters to televise the Nedbank Cup Final to an audience of more than 100-million viewers.
The Final will be played at Soccer City on May 22 - on the same day as the Uefa Champions League Final - and Siem told Business Day that this would be the first opportunity for the world to see the venue that will host the opening and closing World Cup ceremonies, as well as the Final of the 2010 showpiece.
"We are not doing this because we want money," Siem told the newspaper. "We are negotiating with these broadcasters because we want to showcase SA."
The 94 000-capacity Soccer City remains untested and the World Cup OC had been searching for a match big enough to open the stadium.
The Nedbank Cup Final on May 22 will be played in the afternoon while the Uefa Champions League Final takes place in the evening.
At this stage three of the local big guns, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs are in the Last 16 of the competition, along with defending champions Moroka Swallows, Ajax Cape Town, AmaZulu, Free State Stars, Bidvest Wits and Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Relegated Jomo Cosmos and First Division outfits FC Cape Town, Pretoria University, Thanda Royal Zulu, Winners Park and Black Leopards, along with amateurs Als Puk Twana are also still in the hunt to get their name splashed around the globe.
