Few surprises in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 2010-04-18 18:59

There were no upsets on Sunday afternoon in the Nedbank Cup.

Park, who was relegated from the National First Division a few weeks ago, had an easy 3-1 win over Vodacom Second Division Parkhurst at Erica Park in Cape Town after leading 1-0 at half-time.

The Polokwane-based club opened the scoring through a 25th minute penalty by goalkeeper Nkueni Mayala, then went further ahead following a great forty-metre blast from Noel Mwandila.

Although Winners’ young opponents tried hard, they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal, and when Leshole Diase hit a low hard shot into the back of the net in the 68th minute – the match was all but over.

Substitute Nicholas le Roux netted a consolation goal for the Capetonians.

Not far away at Ikamva, FC Cape Town beat Ikapa Sporting 2-1 with Lyle Lakay and Ashley Hartog on target for the victors, while Ikapa netted a late penalty from the boot of Francis Djiena Lienou.

At the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Royals did the Eastern Cape proud by holding Aces to a 2-2 after extra time but wilted during the penalty shoot, losing 5-3.

Aces’ hero was Mpho Maleka, who netted a first half brace as well as the winning penalty.

Although Royals bounced back in the second period taking the match to extra time, they did not have the stamina or accuracy to knock the PSL team off their pedestal during the dreaded spot-kicks.
