John Utaka gets Nigeria World Cup recall

Posted: 18 April 2010 Time: 5:23 pm

Portsmouth's John Utaka, FC Zurich's Onyekachi Okonkwo and Salzburg's Rabiu Afolabi have been handed Nigeria recalls by Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback after extended spells in the international wilderness.

Outside of that, there were no surprises in Lagerback's list of 44, released by the NFF on Sunday, with only three players getting first time call ups.

Advocates of more players from the domestic league would be placated after the Swede included six players from the Nigeria Premier League, led by top scorer Ahmed Musa.

But there was no place for out-of-form fullback Chibuzor Okonkwo, who has been upstaged in the home-based Super Eagles team by the impressive Terna Suswan of Lobi Stars.

Rising midfielder Rabiu Ibrahim's lack of club action also counted against him, as he was not included. But Haruna Lukman, who has locked down a place in the Monaco midfield, gets a chance to impress the new coach in camp.

The players are to report to camp in the United Kingdom from April 27 and 28.

FULL LIST:

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Hapoel Tel Aviv, Israel), Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei Yehuda, Israel), Austin Ejide (Hapoel Petah Tikva, Israel), Greg Etafia (Moroka Swallows, South Africa) and Bassey Akpan (Bayelsa United, Nigeria)

Midfielders/Forwards: Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Victor Anichebe (Everton, England), Chinedu Obasi (TSG Hoffenheim, Germany), Nwankwo Kanu, John Utaka (Portsmouth, England), Obafemi Martins (Wolfsburg, Germany), Brown Ideye (FC Sochaux, France), Femi Ajilore (Groningen, Netherlands), Joseph Akpala (FC Brugge, Belgium), Peter Utaka (Odense Boldklub, Denmark), Michael Eneramo (Esperance, Tunisia), Ikechukwu Uche (Real Zaragoza, Spain), Obinna Nsofor (Malaga, Spain), Kalu Uche (Almeria, Spain), Dickson Etuhu (Fulham, England), Mikel Obi (Chelsea, England), Sani Kaita (Alaniya, Russia), Haruna Lukman (AS Monaco, France), Yusuf Ayila (Dynamo Kiev, Ukraine), Osaze Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow, Russia), Seyi Olofinjana (Hull City, England), Onyekachi Okonkwo (FC Zurich, Switzerland), Omatsone Aluko (Aberdeen, Scotland), Gabriel Reuben (Enyimba, Nigeria), Ahmed Musa, Solomon Okpako (Kano Pillars, Nigeria), Bartholomew Ibenegbu (Heartland FC).

This guy added some new players. Correct me if I am wrong. Be reminded that only few Nigerian players (e.g Mikel) play in top clubs, so we have to make use of what we have. What really matters and what makes the difference in the field of play is the coach's tactics and philosophy. There is nothing wrong in Mr Lagerback using the same set of players that Amodu has been using. It is a simple ideology of using the same set of ingredients but a different cook. I bet you, the food will taste differently. So lets give this guy some space and the needed support so that he can produce desirable results with these players.
I wish them all the best.

This is definately NFF''s list.Well, LagerBeer is a grown up man, if he allows this set of NFF men 2 tele-guide him, he will end up like Berti Vogts... I thought I will see names like solomon owello,Benjamin owuachi, edward ofere, , adigun salami, emmanuel ekpo, rabiu ibrahim,etc....Well, i will not start criticism now but I dnt see us even qualifying frm d group stages not 2 talk of quater-finals that LagerBeer spoke about...NA SIDE-DOWN LOOK ME DEY NOW...I feel they must hv demanded "kola" frm Nedum Onuoha, dats y he changed his mind.NO COUNTRY GROWS THIS WAY.

People talk of fresh legs i do wonder where they are if not these collection are idealy or remains our current best legs. SE is not for experiments and we shall still narrow down to the crop that were in Angola which to me, remains our very best but will be upgraded or charged with good and competent tactical approaches to games. Imagine dropping Martins for Onwuachi must be a crazy decision. Rabiu Ibrahim is not an SE quality for now but i will stake for Haruna who seems the only new found and will easily brake into that SE midfield. Victor Moses is still not SE quality same goes to even Onuoha.

These White men has a way of sweet washing Nigerians. Lars Largerback has been busy talking about NEW Players. Where are they in his 44 Man list. I just pray Nigerian gets it right someday. Amodu would have equally invited the above list. The earlier we start appreciating ours, the better for us

Sometimes, I feel like just wanting to read piece of news and go without looking at the blogs. Are we mow expecting 44 new players? haba. If we dont have anything good to say, isnt it better to keep quiet rather than complaining about players? And were there no new legs there? @Eric's comment was very intelligent. Use the same set of players if you like, but how they are used is what is important. We should look forward to a good outing rather than this pessimistic approach. Please make this blog interesting to visit with tasteful comments, abeg!
