Nigeria get FIFA ban warning

Posted: 2010-04-17 12:59

FIFA have again asked the Nigeria Football Federation to take action over the current litigation against the NPL and NFF by Sam Sam Jaja, or risk sanction from the world football governing body.

Sam Jaja, a former NFA board member, has taken the football authorities to a civil court following his disqualification from contesting the elections into the board of the Nigeria Premier League.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday put off hearing in Jaja’s case till Monday, but over the weekend, FIFA wrote to the NFF directing that action be taken.

In early April, FIFA sent in a letter to the Nigeria Football Federation, harping on its article 64, par. 2, which states that any recourse to ordinary courts of law is prohibited.

The world football ruling body has again reiterated this fact, and warned at the weekend that “FIFA member associations must ensure that their own members comply with the Statutes (art. 13, par. 1 (d) of the FIFA Statutes). As a consequence, we request the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ask for an immediate withdrawal of the claim and, in case of non compliance by the claimant, to take sanction against him.

“We remind you that if the NFF does not comply, FIFA could have to act according to art. 13 par. 2 of the FIFA Statutes which states that violation of obligations by any member may lead to sanctions.”

NFF Chief Media Officer Ademola Olajire stated that such a sanction would be in the form of a ban on Nigeria, which would mean the country would be kicked out of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

"An axe is presently dangling over that participation as FIFA is uncomfortable with the continued litigation over the NPL elections, as Jaja continues his fight in ordinary court of law on Monday.

"Here, it is clear that one man’s ambition is threatening the country’s World Cup participation, as FIFA’s sanction is usually in form of suspension of Member Association," Olajire said.

FROM SUN NEWSPAPERS:ONUOHA`S GOAL CREDITED TO TEVEZ

Carlos Tevez has been credited officially with the second goal in the Manchester City’s 5–1 victory over Birmingham. Nedum Onuoha thought he had scored, but handed it over to the Argentina striker, who got a slight touch.

Now, the club asked to rule on the official scorer because the Premier League only steps into debates about possible own goals, has awarded the goal to Tevez.

It takes the former Old Trafford striker, Tevez, to 22 goals in the Premier League and at the heart of the hunt for the coveted Golden Boot, and 28 in all, his biggest-ever haul in a single campaign.

Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini wants his free-scoring Manchester City players to keep their foot on the pedal in the remaining five games of the Barclays Premier League season. It seems a straight fight between Mancini and Harry Redknapp for a coveted Champions League place and the former Inter Milan boss is up for the challenge.

“We know that it is vital we have a good goal difference because that could possibly decide who finishes in the fourth place,” Mancini told City’s website.

Majority of the forumites beware of certain jobless non Nigerians posing on this forum as Nigerians, some even use Nigerian names like Emeka and JayJayOkocha. They make sarcastic and offensive statements on this forum. Their aim is to antagonise the real Nigerians on this forum and they do not have the interest of our National team at heart. I will urge all Nigerians to ignore them whenever they make any comments
