Ajax Cape Town face Wings United in Nedbank Cup

Ajax ready for Wings

Ajax Cape Town must set aside the disappointment of losing out in the Telkom Knockout Cup Final to Kaizer Chiefs last weekend and focus their minds on Wings United in the Last 32 round of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

The match at the Boland Rugby Stadium kicks off at 15h00.

The Urban Warriors suffered the agony of losing a second successive domestic cup final when they went down 2-1 to the Amakhosi at Durban's Absa Stadium this past Saturday evening.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Cape side, as they were not only the defending champions of the Telkom Knockout Cup and looking to become the first side to defend the title since Chiefs in 2003 to 2004, they had also been soundly beaten by Golden Arrows in the Final of the MTN8 earlier in the season.

Nonetheless, coach Foppe de Haan and his charges must look to get on with the job when they face Wings United, a Vodacom League (third tier) side who are one of the top teams in the Northern Cape region.

United hail from Pabalelo in Upington and will be participating in the Last 32 round of the Nedbank Cup for the first time in their history.

The club was formed in 1981 and they are no slouches in cup tournaments, with recent success at regional level in the Connell Easter Tournament, the Reconciliation Cup and the Kheis Municipality's Samuel Gous Tournament.

The side is coached by Desmond Maganga, who started his career at the club before going onto play in the junior ranks at Santos in Cape Town, at Mitchells Plein United and back in Upington at Louisvale Pirates before rejoining Wings United in 2006.

Ajax last won the Nedbank Cup back in 2007 when it was under different sponsorship. On that occasion the Urban Warriors trounced Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in the final.

The Cape Town side will still be without Lance Davids, who has jetted off with his Bafana Bafana teammates for a training camp in Germany, but de Haan will be delighted to welcome back attacker Thulani Serero.
