Kaizer Chiefs' Jimmy Tau hopes for World Cup spot

Tau fighting to the end

Posted: 2010-04-15 07:43

Jimmy Tau has been in the national team wilderness for over three years, but he tells KickOff.com there is a chance for him to break into the Bafana Bafana team for the World Cup.

The Kaizer Chiefs right back has been capped eight times at senior international level, the last of his caps coming as a substitute to replace Cyril Nzama in a 1-0 loss to Bolivia on 28 March 2007 at Coca-Cola Park Stadium during Carlos Alberto Parreira's first stint. Siboniso Gaxa, Bryce Moon and Anele Ngcongca appear to be Parreira's preference in their order for the position, but Tau insists there is a chance for him too.

"I would have loved to be in Germany with Bafana Bafana… I would have loved to be there," he says.

"It is something that I have always wanted to achieve as a person, to play for the national team but having said that I don't think I can select myself. I want to be selected on merit and if I continue working hard as I have been doing I don't see anything stopping me from being in the national team," Tau declares.

"I want to believe that until Bafana start their first game in the World Cup anything is possible. You could miss out on the camps, but you can still make it to the final squad. I want to be there and that's why I'm working so hard," he says.

Meanwhile, the Kimberley-born right back says the Telkom Knockout success has put the team under pressure to achieve more. Amakhosi take on SuperSport United at the Rand Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Nedbank Cup last 32.

"There will always be pressure for us, more so because we did well in the Telkom Knockout. We have created a huge expectation by winning the Telkom Cup and there is pressure to live up to that. But we are playing a very good team and we have to really prepare for this," he adds.

COSATU: 2010-04-15 08:39

Thats da spirit Tau ,,, i also believe Nale will be in a final squad.

@Jose it is always better to read before you comment. Tau never said he better than anyone, he said he will keep working hard and be selected on merit unlike some of your favourites in the squad.

Mongalo had a good game against Tau unfortunately that does not make him a better player. Haters are still clinging to 5 seconds fame as if it is previous metal. Grow up

JAY E: 2010-04-15 09:04

good spirit, leaders like u r needed.

Tau and other players need to learn that in Football like in any other job, you need to always work hard to achieve your ambitions. He should have worked hard throughout his career because doing so now may be a little too late. If he tells us he has been working just as hard throughout, I suppose the fact that he has not been selected should tell him he just does not have what it takes. He should rather concentrate on his club football.

Fight till you get your butts onn the phashasha seat watching deserving players in action during the World Cup. Just fight till the end to get a nice makaraba & a vuvuzela...

There's still a chance my captain. Keep producing similar perfomance as your last 3 games. You shall make it. All the best Khosi

Msenti and other haters,1. Tau has been busy with his studies if you did not know. Not that he did not put a fighting spirit whilst still studying but that it was really impossible to put his full concentration on the game than the bigger picture of life. 2. Mongala that you sing praise of, how many times have Chiefs met with Pirates and Chiefs beat you guys whilst still having your past Mongala. It's not that I hate the boy but you should stop making him more than he is. He is yet to realise his full potential. Otherwise keep it up Captain. You deserve a place there.

Let’s be realistic, not being considered for the two training camps (as a home based player) means that you don’t meet the requirements i.e. there no chance that you’ll make to final selection. OR maybe I am reading between the lines, maybe he is implying that he fighting for a chance to make it to the next(2014) world, which I also doubt as age is not on his side.

"It is something that I have always wanted to achieve as a person, to play for the national team but having said that I don't think I can select myself."

Guys there is nothing wrong with, I bet any South African player wants to represent their country.Don't crucify my Captain 4 saying this.

I will mention 1 player & that is Oupa Manyisa.
I was actually impressed by how he managed to keep Tlou out of the game.
I think he's another real thing.

Even if Tau dont make it 2 de world cup it doesnt matter. He has already achieve a lot as a soccer player. He captained OP & now KC. Moreover, he is an academic. U lot commenting negatively about him r failure in yo own life coz u r not famous let alone achieved anything great in yo life. Letletse mo diofficeng le diclerk, sis. Anyway, if Mashego, Schalkwyk, Moriri made it, y not Jimmy. Go hater ga lona go tlhabisa ditlhong, sis bleksams sis!
