Niger beat home-based Eagles

Posted: 2010-03-13 20:44

Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the second African Nations Championships suffered a major dent when the home-based Super Eagles were beaten 2-0 by Niger Republic on Saturday.

Both goals were scored in the first half of the game in Niamey.

The result means that the team, led by Daniel Amokachi, will have to score at least three times to progress.

A total of 16 teams will contest the second ever championships, double the number that took part in the inaugural event.

Nigeria, led by Okey Emordi failed to qualify.

No. Its Amodu's fault, Good home based players abound in the league bla, bla, bla . I hope Amodu would be exonerated one day. This was not the team that beat Congo. The team that beat congo had some foreign based players. Maybe SiaSia would have done better?

Ola: 2010-03-13 21:18

We all now see reason why no home base will make it to World cup, they are simply not yet ripe enough for such major tournament. Dan Amokachie, more work for you to do, or you want to fail again like u did in 2008 Olympics when you almost squander the team qualifying chances?

chudi: 2010-03-13 21:23

ibenegbu was one of just 3 homebased players invited to SE pre-Angola. Uche Agba was nominated for CAF best player in the continent. Can someone pls explain to me how come NEITHER of them were in this team?

Toluwase: 2010-03-13 21:37

THAT'S WHY COACH SUIBU CONDEMNED THE LOCAL BASE PLAYERS. USELESS PEOPLE.

Nwachinemere: 2010-03-13 21:42

Siasia is the man no matter what.So Nff keep ur enemity with Siasia aside and do the right thing 4 once get Siasia on board, imagin nigeria loseing to Niger RP.That means if this friendly match they played last time had been played at away we wouldnt have won that game.Considering this result. This is not a good well come to the new coach at all.So bad has our football gotten.Niger RP please. That shows that alot is still need to be done.GOD BLESS ALL MY FORUMITES HERE.

Eric: 2010-03-13 21:48

Amokachi has to prove himself with this home based eagles. He has to justify his inclusion as an assistant coach to Las Lagerback.

Methink that NFF should have given Siasia the home based eagles so that he can use that as a platform for emerging as the next super eagles coach after Las Lagerback.

collins: 2010-03-13 22:01

can you people just stop siasia mania whenever our team failed.it is getting absurd.

Embele: 2010-03-13 22:17

so who was the starting lineup? The last friendly, I think only Okonkwo was in the defense. Despite all the 0-0 and 1-0 games, do Nigeria league players really learn to play quality defense?

SANCHEZ: 2010-03-13 22:25

Is Amokachi a coach?, i believe he is just been rehabilitated by his masters in the sports ministry after squandering the money he made when he was active as a player. There are many quality players in the nigerian league, the problem is the politics of selection, after all Niger played us with their own home based players. Or is the Nigerien league better than ours?. untill we get the right calibre of people to run the nff, we have to live with what is happening now. what is wrong with giving keshi, oliseh or siasia a chance to handle the home based eagles. AMOKACHI OUT

Well well well....I got nothing to write about....SH *T happens....lets hope they do something in the return ,leg

dozie: 2010-03-13 23:10

I believe their are more to this than we all know. First the team left Abuja with bus to Niger thru sokoto on wednesday. NFF failed here. Second the temp in Niger at this time of the year is close to 45 degrees celcius.way above the 30 and 31 we are experiencing in Nija. From the above, the bus left on wed and reached on thurs morning. The team trained on thurs evening, Friday morning and evening. Then played game on Sa****ay. Never, i mean never will these guys acclimatize to the Nigerien weather. But no need crying over a spilled milk. Amokachi still have the opportunity to redeem himself. A whitewashing of Niger in Abuja is the only way i will be convinced that the Nigeriens didnt use their weather advantage.

I rest my case

The word.: 2010-03-14 00:57

Maybe Niger use their pro. from division one and we use our amature players. How can someone explain this? jokes apart enyemba will beat niger.
Amokachi need to cut his hair to have fresh air on his skull. We must win the second leg.
I cant wait for mr. lager-beer first match. I dont care against who, or players he use.

Segun: 2010-03-14 01:16

I am really surprised with this result. Are these not the same set of players that have been doing well in the continent in the past years? Nigeria has even been doing better than Ghana, Tunisia and even Egypt (not only Al Ahly is in Egypt) in the continent. I am coming to believe that the quality of coach plays a very important role. Amokachi has to prove his mettle in the second leg considering how he also failed in his first national assignment.

Obi: 2010-03-14 01:44

Quite frankly, this is disappointing!

The pertinent questions are:
1.) Are the guys that represented us really the best in the country?
2.) How good is Amokachi as a coach? From his time in the U-23 team some years back, I'm not impressed! Being a good player is one thing, but being a good Manager is another.
3) I thought Amodu was the coach of this team.....where is he? NFF have to get their act together. If Amodu does not want to coach this team, they should dispense with his services and get someone else! The CHAN offers opportunity for us to develop another crop of players who can, in time, step into the real SE. This is not a position to be used for appeasement of disgruntled people!
4.) Did the coaching crew/NFF do their due diligence on the conditions in Niamey? I remember the real SE defeated the Mena by 3-1 in that stadium in 2007 in an AFCON (Ghana 2008) qualifier, and that match was played at snail speed due to the awful heat (more than 40 deg. celsius) in the stadium. Were our boys prepared for such conditions?
5.) We cannot afford to miss this competition again, because we would be losing an opportunity to blood new talent in a competion format. What is the NFF going to do to salvage the situation?
6.) Finally, how can a country that produced 3 teams that reached the semi-final stage of the two premier African club competitions (Heartland and Kano Pillars in Champs league, and Bayelsa in Confed cup) be dumped by a country that had no representative in the latter stages of ANY of the competitiond? Clearly this is a case of cluelessness, planlessness, and Maagaism!!!! Perhaps we should have selected one of the clubs from last year to represent us, with their management playing the role of NFF!

The situation is bad, but I'm hopeful that we can turn it around. Perhaps Amokachi needs help!

The King Osangas, Stanley Okoros, Orelesi have all joined foreign clubs for trials etc.

Did I hear someone say home based players for the WC and ANC? I didn't think so...

Oh may I remind y'all that the WISE MEN at the glass house have appointed Amokachi as an assistant to new coach Lagarback.

Does anybody still need a soothsayer to realize that problem of Nigerian football is NOT coaching.Look to the GLASS HOUSE in Abuja my friends.

We will be back here in June to complain. If we are not careful we will also be back in 2012,2014 etc...enof said.

ejay: 2010-03-14 11:47

shut up.. what are u guys gonna say when Lagerback starts giving us similar results?

Segun: 2010-03-14 12:22

I am surprised that some people are already giving up on home based players making it to the world cup. I do not think people have been canvassing for wholy home based before, what we want is that the best players should be selected for each wing. There are some areas in the Super Eagles being manned by players (foreign) who are not better than some of the home based players. Moreover, like it has been pointed out, where the best players selected? what was the technical input to the team? That is why Lagerback needs assistants that will be fair and honest that can suggest the best players in the country to him. May God help us.

Theo: 2010-03-14 12:41

From what we watched yesterday, an Enyimba team would have done far better. I wonder if this is the same team that beat Congo some weeks ago. With this kind of performance, I think those proposing the inclusion of the home based players in the Super Eagles should go to sleep now. They have nothing to offer!

@obi,i partially disagreed with you for the fact being, how on earth a football federation will select players for a coach?let us be honest and fair with our selves.those people managing our football does'nt suppose to be their.our football problems is more than coaching alone, that was the reason they removed coaches like women slips to cover up.how many times must we cry for poor results?are you aware those guys travelled by road through sokoto?

i understand peoples disappointment on the Eagles lossing to the so called smaller team or nation Niger Repulic, but let me ask a question. is it about time we start giving credit to these so called smaller footballing nations.

I Tell you one thing, these nations get extra motivated when they play Nigeria. They extra incentives for them if the beat Nigeria. they look forward to matches like this. while Nigeria would be busy underminding the their opponents.

both fans and players comes out with comments such as "ISN'T IT ONLY SMALL NIGER REPUBIC" OR IF WE DON'T SCORE 4 OR FIVE GOALS PASS THEM THEN IT WOULD BE CONSIDERED A BAD OUTTING.

As a footballer, you have to pysic yourself up. don't allow complacency to set in otherwise you would find your team 2 or three goals down.

This is where the so called minors have the edge on Nigeria. they pysic themselves up, while we are busy underestimating them.

No doubt, we have better footballers than most of the African countries, but no doubt we do not have the best attitude or approach towards matches.

Mind you this is only my opinion.

jeff: 2010-03-14 14:48

A TEAM SELECTED BY A CLUELESS FA ,AND GIVEN TO AN UNTESTED COACH WHO SHOULDN'T BE NOWHERE NEAR A QUALITY NATIONAL TEAM.
WHATS MY POINT?? AMOKACHI SHOULD SACRIFICE HIS 1.5MILLION NAIRA MONTHLY SALARY AND TRAVEL FOR SOME COACHING COURSES, YOU CAN'T GIVE WHAT YOU DONT HAVE.
PLEASE ANYBODY WHO KNOWS HIM SHOULD ADVICE HIM TO GO FOR SOME REFRESHER COURSES CAUSE HE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.
ONLY THE LULU'S AND OGUNJOBI'S OF THIS WORLD WILL PUT A SQUARE PEG IN A ROUND HOLE.

Polly: 2010-03-14 16:43

All those saying that we would come back here to complain in June are the enemies of Nigerian football. Why wish for the downfall of your country so that you can claim justification? Real fans would have buried the hatchet by now and given their total support to the new coach. After all, he has not even played a match yet.

UP SUPER EAGLES.

jeff: 2010-03-14 17:58

@obi,segun and sanchez you guys just hit the hammer on the nail.
The questions are..
1]were the best homebased players selected?
2]whats the technical input to the team ?
3]And when will our indigenous coaches have the B.A.L.L.S to say NO whenever NFF selects or invites players for them?
Oh well...
LETS FACE IT, WE HAVE GOOD LEAGUE PLAYERS BUT HUMAN ERRORS[ERROR-PRONE NFF AND WRONG COACHES] RE HAMPERING THEIR PROGRESS.

D. Adeleye scored against his team today. What does that tell us? Not all these pro are so good. Some home based players can still be better than these european players.

Frank: 2010-03-14 21:51

And some loud mouths will be shouting themselves hoax for home based players. Without our array of foreign based players Nigeria isn't what the paper it is written on. With a league that hardly sees away victories!

ejay: 2010-03-15 01:43

We need everyone in this forum.. there are two types of fans (maybe more) passionate fans, and logical fans. I belong to the latter. while i love the Super Eagles, I am logical enough to identify what the problem truly is when they are not playing well. Passionate fans are not logical enough to identify the true problems, they let their emotion override thier sense of reason. and i'm not saying this to be critical, i'm just stating a point. and the point again is we need both types of fans.. My prediction is, based on the decisions taken by NFF which is similar to that taken in the past, I expect the same results.. Let's hope we start planning better for 2014

Dibia: 2010-03-15 06:47

Amodu does not have a school certificate and Amokachi too.How can they suddenly become coaches of our national team. The home based players are good, they need to play together and be groomed together for a while. you dont just assemble homebased players and expect result immediately. there must be team tactics and pattern.Westerhof did it and it took him 5years to accomplish a tangible result.

Dibia: 2010-03-15 06:50

Amokachi has the charisma to become a good coach but the problem is that he does not have a school certificate not to talk of being a national team coach. Amokachi should be coaching a division 3 club in kaduna or jigawa.

Garvey: 2010-03-15 08:16

ONE QUESTION TO YOU ALL DEAR FORUMITE. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DOWNWARD TREND WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING IN OUR FOOTBALL FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS? IF YOU ALL KNOW THE ANSWER THEN IT IS HIGH TIME WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. WE HAVE COMPLAINED FOR TOO LONG WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING. NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT. AND I CAN TELL, WE CAN ACHIEVE WHAT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE, EVEN IF SOME OF US ARE NOT RESIDENT IN THE COUNTRY.

muna: 2010-03-15 08:43

I really don't know why you nigerian fans are so stupid, at least i know i'm not as stupid as yall did you honestly think home based players can win silver wear for nigeria. I said it once i'll say it again you guys are a curse, god punish you for your bad idea's and sentiments. if home based nigeia players are the future then, nigeria has no future i said it before, during and after cup of nations no home based players now do you see.

ken gadaffi: 2010-03-15 10:21

Where are thou Faith? Oh Ye of little faith. Just last week, many of you were heaping praises on the team after that mauled Congo 5-2. Loosing 2-0 to Niger republic now has seen many turning their back against the team.
Well, I hope Lagerback can begin to understand the type of FANS we have in NIGERIA.

I still believe that the team will turn the table over NIGER come second leg. Lets not rule them off so fast.

@ejay - How do we start planning for 2014? It's not just to hope but to be active in bringing about a change, so that we will continue doing things the same way and expect a different result.

gerry: 2010-03-15 11:19

@ejay. You make me laugh. but don't you know that you can be logical in your reasoning but if you are not passionate then you are not really a fan.

An unpassionate fan is like somebody that understands football but has no interest or emotion attached to the game. really fans are passionate.

Garvey: 2010-03-15 11:55

Correction:
I meant to write ",so that we will not continue to do things the same way and expect a different result"

Polly: 2010-03-15 12:51

@ejay, if you are not passionate, you are not a fan. Football is all about passion. Passion is the fuel with which the vehicle of football is driven.

I disagree with those who say we don't have quality players in the local league. How come our football clubs did very well in the continenet last year with even Kano Pillars eliminating the dreaded Ahly of Egypt. The latest result shows that you need more than good players to excell. Because we lost to Niger is not enough to castigate the local players. We have very good players especially in clubs like Enyimba, Heartland, Kano Pillars, Dolphins and Warri Wolves. It would have been better for us to make the nucleus of the come come from a few clubs for proper blending. I remember in the eighties, we had a sub-regional competition and the coach invited 17 out of 30 players from Leventis United of Ibadan to the national team.

Are the players who went to Niger truly the best the local league can offer? Was there no way we could have flown to Niger instead of travelling by road? Did the coach pick the players or were they imposed on him? How conversant is the coach with the local league and the players? Did we play the politics of the game well enough? These are pertinent questions the authorities need to answer. We should desist from always addressing issues on the basis of Amodu or no Amodu. Because Amodu said that the local players are not good enough does not mean that it is true praying for them to fail so that you can now come here and say Amodu said so. What a sad way to be a fan.

UP SUPER EAGLES.

jeff: 2010-03-15 12:52

@9ja ,so you really believed that 'pathetic' statement about the homebased not good??...only a lazy coach will say that. just wondering if mikel, kanu,et'al just made it to europe from their father's house without making it in the local scene first.
Remember dike lost to benue republic with the under17[during the african under17 qualifiers] before obuh was contacted, so maybe if we go by the logic that homebased[under17] were trash, then i wonder where the flying hell obuh would have raised his team.
Also our two teams[heartland and pillars] made it to the CAF champions league semi-finals and finals last year with pillars beating the highly rated AHLY of Egypt with 40%[or even more] of the egyptian national team on parade.
What those guys[homebased]needs is encouragement, confidence and right tacticts which most of the coaches attached to them dont have.
IMO, the national team coach should be both homebased and foreing based coach, maybe the incoming NFF will scrap this joke idea of having two different coaches for both homebased and foreing based eagles.
I blame the clueless lulu and co for all these nonsense.
I pray and hope GOD t they turn things around during the return leg.

Obi: 2010-03-15 14:18

@IceQueen.......I'm surprised that you read my comment to mean support for Amodu! By all means NO! When I said that the home-based SE are not the place to appease disgruntled people, I actually had that gentleman in mind! In my opinion, Amokachi is also not good enough, and I can't see how we can make progress with him in charge of this team, given what I saw of his time with the U-23 boys. My points is these:

- invite the very best in the local league
- hand them over to a good indegenous coach (and there are plenty of them)
- give them good administrative support.

If the NFF implement the above, you won't believe the results that team will produce.

Let us move beyond this "Amodu this....Amodu that..." bickering. The man is yesterday's man, period! His present antics (disappearing from the team at this crucial phase of qualification) are childish and irresponsible, and clearly paint him as unprofessional, and therefore richly deserving of the demotion handed to him by the hesitant NFF! My thesis is that the NFF actually sabotaged our WC effort by retaining him for as long as the AFCON. @IceQueen..........make no mistake about this: Amodu as a coach has nothing to offer us!

ken gadaffi: 2010-03-15 17:33

@Jeff, you made some good points in your very last comment. The fact of the matter is Nigerians are simply impatient. Nigerians are always in a haste to bring out the knife when there is no cause for alarm yet when the time to fight comes, they run away.
AMOKACHI may not be a good coach, but if he doesnt learn to loose now how and when will he learn to win? I remember wenger, ferguson, morinho and many of the big time coaches now started their career with some embarraing defeats. If they had been booted out then, i am sure they wouldnt be where they are now.

The Home based eagles will pull through at the end, all they need is 3 goals and i don't see why that will be impossible at home.

Let us all learn to support our team in good and bad times rather than outright criticism at every errors made.

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

ken gadaffi: 2010-03-15 18:13

If it were a foreign coach took the Super Eagles to NIGER, would they have travelled by Road? Lets call a spade a spade, THE NFF are the main problem of our football and not until the round peg is put in the round hole, We can only but grumble.

And to those who now see those being pessimistic about our WORLD CUP prospects as enemies of NIGERIA, i think you are getting it all wrong. While those of us who supported AMODU were optimistic for his success at the Nations come, many openly wanted the SE to fail then. But Right now, i have seen that the die hard AMODU supporters have remnained loyal to the SE and have been wishing LAGERBACK well, that doesnt mean We cant fault him if he errs nor advise him on areas he may not have thought about.
