Golden Arrows scored their first win of 2010 when they beat Platinum Stars 2-1 in a Telkom Knockout Cup match at the Chatsworth Stadium this afternoon.
Luis Renteria put Stars ahead, but the home side hit back with two late goals, courtesy of a Reuben Thebakang own-goal and a late winner from Tshepo Mashego.
The first half was an evenly contested affair. Arrows were responsible for producing the two most threatening attempts on goal during this passage of play, both from set-pieces.
First Msekeli Mvalo curled a free-kick on target in the 25th minute from the edge of area, forcing keeper Tapiwa Kapini to punch the well struck effort to safety. Ten minutes later, Mzivukile Tom’s header from Lindokhule Bengu’s corner sailed just past Kapini’s upright.
Arrows were much more energetic in the second half and began to direct much more purposeful raids towards the Stars penalty area. Midfielder Vusumuzi Vilakazi collected a ball on the edge of the Stars penalty area, but his stinging drive was blocked by Mbulelo Mabizela shortly after the interval.
Thokozani Mshengu went on a slalom run the 60th minute, but directed his effort straight at Kapini from just inside the box. Vilakazi tested Kapini’s reflexes in the 62nd minute with a close range effort.
Stars took the lead against the run of play in the 72nd minute when striker Renteria started and finished a counter-attacking move with the help of Mzikayise Mashaba.
Arrows hit back with two strikes in the space of three minutes with Thamsanqa Gabuza having a strong hand in both goals. Siyanda Zwane sent a teasing cross into the Stars area in the 83rd minute, which defender Thebakang headed into his own goal after being put under heavy pressure from Gabuza.
Mashego got the winner when he headed home Gabuza’s cross.
Stars Almiro Lobo was given a red card in injury time for a second bookable offence.
