Mamelodi Sundowns' fans have reason to smile ahead of the new season. The pockets of their president, Patrice Motsepe, have just got deeper and fuller with cash.
Motsepe (48), who, according to Forbes Magazines' latest list of billionaires released yesterday, is now worth more than R17-billion after adding a further R7-billion to his net worth last year.
South Africa's first black billionaire lost some of his fortune earlier after the global recession but made up his losses as result of rising stock prices and South African Rand's strength against the dollar.
The self-made mining magnate is listed in position 421 on the global list; the same position as occupied by South Africa's other billionaire, Johan Rupert and his family. (For the record, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is ranked 50th on the world list).
Motsepe was born in Soweto, trained as a lawyer before becoming the first black partner at Bowman Gilfillan law firm in Johannesburg.
He started starting a contracting business doing mine scut work, then bought low-producing gold mine shafts in 1994, turned them profitable using lean, mean management style.
Motsepe's African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) now has interests in a wide range of minerals: platinum, nickel, chrome, iron, manganese, coal and gold.
