Ghana can bank on at least two individual awards at the Glo Africa Football Awards on Thursday.
The country is well represented in the nominations for the event that will honour the most outstanding individuals and teams from the year 2009 in Africa football and Ghana's giant strides that year is heavily reflected in the nominations.
Michael Essien is shortlisted yet again for the player of the year but as was the case in previous year, it is highly unlikely that he will win with Samuel Eto'o the favourite after his superb campaign with Barcelona when his goals helped them to a treble of champions league, domestic league and Spanish Cup success in addition to helping Cameroon qualify for the World Cup.
If he clinches the prize in Accra, it will take him to four individual African Player of the Year awards and further enhance his status as a legend of the game on the continent.
Didier Drogba who won the award the last time it was held in Ghana for the year 2006 is likely to run him close though.
Ghana is also up for the team of the year award alongside Ivory Coast and Algeria. The North Africans did a remarkable job in edging past Egypt for the sole World Cup ticket available in the group after a play-off. Ghana and Ivory Coast though made mince meat of their various qualifying groups with the Black Stars securing qualification for a second straight world cup well ahead of the rest of the park.
The last time a Ghanaian won the coach of the year award was in 2000 when Jones Attuquayefio, fresh from leading Hearts to a treble of local league, Africa Champions League and domestic cup triumph picked up the honour.
That award this year will most certainly go to Sellas Tetteh who masterminded Ghana's victory first at the Africa Youth Championships before taking the Black Stars to a thrilling victory at the world youth event in Egypt months later.
The star of that show was Dominic Adiyiah whose eight goals made him the most outstanding player of that tournament. It may well make him the best young player on the continent officially with South Africa's Kermit Erasmus his only realistic competition.
