Pienaar banned from driving

Posted: 2010-03-09 16:23

Bafana Bafana midfielder Steven Pienaar will have to catch a lift to training at English Premiership Everton after being banned from driving in the UK for 12 months.

The 27-year-old pled guilty to drink driving on court and was also fined £1 000 (R11 000), with an additional £100 (R1 100) for failing to comply with a traffic signal.

Pienaar was reportedly twice the legal limit after being pulled over in the early hours of the morning following Everton's 3-1 victory over Manchester United in an English Premiership fixture on February 21.

He can get his sentence reduced by three months if he undergoes an alcohol awareness course before October 7.

Pienaar has had continued bad luck with the law since arriving at Goodison Park in 2007. An ex-girlfriend called the police on him claiming a domestic dispute, but no action was taken, and he was then one of many Merseyside footballers to have his house burgled in recent years.

The Bafana midfielder tells KickOff.com he has learnt his lesson. “It is okay, man. It is part of life and you learn from these things,” he says.

He will hope that these off-field problems do not affect his game, having emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Premiership this season, and a key man for Bafana Bafana's chances at the 2010 World Cup.

Mr. : 2010-03-09 18:06

Well @Soccer Critic, steven is the only soccer play S/A has at the moment, I dont know where you get your teko to compare with such world class player, dont you watch him in english league?. your teko must go and play soccer where other are playing, if he make first 11 regularly or didnt run and come back like other s/a players, then we will count him in. drinking and woman is a south african thing, even Judges and JZ do it. plz say something more important b/c people are laughing when the read your comment.

Raymon: 2010-03-10 02:38

i think Teko must be sleeping with Tivani.Pienaar overrated? hahahahah did you see what he did to Hull over the weekend. Please Tivani take Teko's d!ck out of your mouth and stop promoting a primadona.

KaMashobana: 2010-03-10 08:35

UK like any other country has its laws....fortunately the laws there are more biting than here especially when it come to reckless driving. The boy has been charged and there is nothing we can do about it.

Its so sad that in this country our own players/former are always found on the wrong side of the road, in some instances leaving innocent people dead with no action taken against them, after marathon court cases....Moon, Doctor,Mabizela,Chabangu,Gert,Teko,Pule,Masinga,Tuka...the list is endless.

Dr Kola: 2010-03-12 14:01

I am glad Pienaar has learned his lessons and he will be alright, he is just a great player, I am his fan and I wish him all the best of luck in his career afterall, he is doing Africa proud in his club.
