Maritzburg United have parted ways with Dikilu Bageta, despite their own findings that he is not guilty of match-fixing.
Bageta was accused by the club of match-fixing after missing a penalty against Mpumalanga Black Aces on February 10 at the Puma Rugby Stadium and was suspended indefinitely after they lost the match 1-0.
Bageta said he was innocent and has been vindicated today.
Maritzburg United's statement reads that "all investigations have been completed without conclusive evidence… in the interest of football, the club and the player hereby amicably part ways with immediate effect. The player is granted his clearance certificate to join any club he so desires".
But why part ways when the player is not guilty?
"Because it wasn't the best of relationships between the club and the player," chairman of the club Farouk Kadodia tells KickOff.com, completely contradicting the statement on the club's website which further reads that "The club and player enjoyed a good cordial relationship and the club wishes to thank the player for his services".
However, Bageta's camp says they are fine with Maritzburg United's decision and are happy with the outcome.
"His contract was due to expire in June and they paid him out every cent.
"They did their own investigations and found nothing, which means Bageta is not guilty of anything. We can now move on," says Bageta's agent Bajo Bajani.
