Eriksson arrives

Posted: 2010-02-25 10:37

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson arrived in Abuja on Thursday morning ahead of his interview for the Nigeria coaching position.

Eriksson arrived, accompanied by his agent Athole Still and was met by NFF officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport before being taken to the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

The Swede is expected to be interviewed at about 13h00 hours by Nigeria football officials.

Eriksson will be the fifth coach to be interviewed, and the second former England manager, after Glenn Hoddle, who is favourite for the post.

i would like erikson to be the manager of the super eagles

Bem: 2010-02-25 10:57

Truth is Sven-Goran Eriksson is and will make a better coach for the SE. He is more accomplished and his record as a coach speaks for him. What credentials does Hoddle have besides a Carling Cup win with Tottenham? Please NFF, pick a good coach for once and stop thinking about your financial gains from hiring someone who has no chances of doing better than Amodu. Incidentally Amodu has a better record than this Hoddle guy. Food for thought.

Super Eagles' Job
PTF endorses Hoddle, Oliseh, Siasia

From Ezeocha Nzeh, Abuja

THE Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the Super Eagles preparation for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa may have endorsed England's former coach, Glenn Hoddles, as technical adviser for the team.

Hoddles, whose application for the job came late, was interviewed by the panel yesterday in Abuja. He looked very confident, promising that he would change the team's approach if given the job. It was learnt yesterday that the Wolves Hampton former coach would be assisted by Super Eagles' former captain, Sunday Oliseh, and Beijing 2007 Olympics silver winning coach, Samson Siasia.

The PTF, it was further learnt, would take charge of the bills of the new technical adviser for the period of the World Cup. The task force was said to have requested Hoddles to submit his programme for the World Cup after he appeared for the interview in Abuja yesterday. A source hinted that the task force and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have concluded plans to invite Oliseh and Siasia to join the coaching crew for the World Cup preparation.

"The PTF wants a good outing for the Super Eagles in South Africa. That informed their decision to assemble the best of the technical crew for the team," the source said.

"With the experience of Sunday Oliseh and Samson Siasia as assistants to Glenn Hoddle, I think the task force has done a good job."

So all the 3 lion rejects are now lining up to coach Nigeria. I read in complete sports that Ericksons application was thrown in the thrash. Who picked it up.

If we must have a foreign coach, please give us FRANK RIJKAARD OR VAN BASTEN. Dutch style is what we want with competent assistance from CHIEF COACH SIASIA and OLISEH

I think the Hoddle-Oliseh-Siasia combination would be best for us in the present circumstances.

Meanwhile, reports in the UK has it that Yobo and Yakubu were denied from traveling to Portugal with the Everton team for today's Europa League match with Sporting Lisbon. They had to make alternative arrangements to travel with the Supporters club this morning. What worries me here is that only the two Nigerian players were barred and an Everton club official said it was because of issues between Nigeria and Portugal.

Not long ago, Victor Agali was involved in a visa or passport forgery controversy in another European country. What problem does Nigeria have with these European countries and is our NFF aware of these problems and the damage it could do to our football?
Don't they know that this kind of situation might discourage foreign clubs from signing our players in future? Imagine Yobo and Yakubu arriving on the morning of the match when their other team mates had already arrived a day earlier and properly rested.

Ekene: 2010-02-25 13:51

We don't need this man Sven-Goran Eriksson! He was a failure in England national team. Please NFF do no made any mistake oooooooooooooooo..........

Just thought this may be of interest to you fellow bloggers..although its not related to the above topic of discussion

Forever young: Nigerian football's age-old problem
N****wo Kanu is 42 and Taribo West, whose career ended two years ago, is in his late fifties, say bloggers in Nigeria

• Tweet this
• Observer Staff
• The Observer, Sunday 21 February 2010
• Article history
N****wo Kanu's official age is 33 but his real age is 42. Obafemi Martins is not 25 but 32. Jay-Jay Okocha was 10 years older than his "official" age throughout his career. And Taribo West, whose playing career ended only two years ago, is in his late fifties. Who says so? A stream of bloggers on some of Nigeria's most popular websites, in response to comments made after the country's timid effort in last month's Africa Cup of Nations.
Failure to win that trophy is nearly always considered a scandal in the continent's most populous nation but Nigeria's latest misadventure in the tournament triggered a particularly explosive condemnation back home.
It started when a former manager of a leading Nigerian club told the Lagos Guardian: "What happened in Angola is a confirmation of what has been happening in the past where most of our players falsified their age during competition. Most of the players are beyond the age they professed and this made it impossible for them to withstand the pace of teams like Zambia and Benin."
It also led to an entertaining discussion that shows no sign of abating as the Nigerians, who have three months to prepare for the World Cup, reacted to the criticism by sacking the coach. "Our boys are old, we are paying the price for age cheating," said Ken Anugweje, a former national team doctor and board member of the Nigerian Football Federation.
Suspicions about true ages of some Nigerian footballers date back 20 years. Fifa banned Nigeria from all international fixtures for two years after finding that the birth dates of three of their players in the 1988 Olympics were different from ones used by the same players in previous tournaments.
A year later Pelé famously declared "an African team will definitely win the World Cup by the turn of the century" after watching seemingly promising Nigerian youngsters lift the Under-17 World Cup and reach the final of the Under-20 competition. How was Pelé to know that the so-called Under-20s of 1989 were so old that, in the words of George Onmonya on nigeriavillagesquare.com, "most of our players have now retired and become grandpas"?
Nigeria have a rich tradition of seemingly promising youngsters who mysteriously fail to fulfil their potential. Phillip Osondu was the best player at the 1987 Under-17 World Cup, after which he was snapped up by Anderlecht, only to drift out of the game and into janitorial work after questions were raised about his real age.
The star of Nigeria's finalists at the 2001 Under-17 competition went on to become officially the third-youngest player to appear in the senior World Cup when he started the 0-0 draw with England in 2002. But that was as good as it got for Femi Opabunmi, who by 2005 was playing part-time football in the French lower leagues.
A trawl through the blogosphere makes for intriguing reading. "A friend of mine who once played in the Nigerian league told me his real age was 34 but his football age was 21," wrote Onmonya. "You can walk into any immigration office in Nigeria today, forge documents at the nearby business centre, change your name, place of birth, date of birth, pay 7,000-10,000 naira instead of the official price of about 5,500 for an international passport and within hours you have completed the whole process." A new passport, a new person – and if you are a footballer, a younger one.
A former employee of the British embassy in Nigeria told Observer Sport that when visa applicants complained to him about having their applications rejected, he would reply: "Well don't talk to me about it, I'm dead." He would respond to their looks of puzzlement by pointing to the wall behind him, on which hung his death certificate, purchased for a small fee from a Lagos supplier. Fifa reckon they have finally come up with a foolproof way of determining real age. Ahead of last year's Under-17 World Cup in, as it happened, Nigeria, the governing body announced that players would be subjected to wrist scans using magnetic resonance imaging, and this would determine their true age.
That led some countries to undertake precautionary scans beforehand. The results were never announced, but Nigeria suddenly discarded 15 squad members, while Gambia omitted 11 of the 18 who had helped them to victory in the African Under-17 championship a few months earlier. Reports claim that retrospective ****yses of the previous three Under-17 World Cups showed more than a third of all players were too old.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/feb/21/nigerian-football-age-old-problem

morale of the story is
1. players please dont lie about your age
2. Bloggers please do not wash out dirty linen in public.

cheers

Shijo: 2010-02-25 14:39

Eriksson spent 5 years as coach of England and not a silverware to his name. What makes him the ideal candidate? If it is true that the preference is for Oliseh and Siasia to assist Glen Hoddle, then maybe something good can come out of this SE at the WC. However, we shall see.

Pro Amodu men (Frank, Original & co), should get a life and move on, as the country has moved on. I appeal to you all to eschew bitterness and let us unite in supporting the SE as they represent the country and indeed Africa at the WC. Since it is obvious that the problem of our football is the NFF, let us mount a public campaign that will force this politicians out of the Glass House and let sound technocrats, administrators take over. Removing Amodu or that he is not allowed to go to the WC should not be our concern now, but how our football can be better.

Frank: 2010-02-25 15:49

@Shijo, I moved on long before Amodu was axed. Am just amused that the insatiable 'fans' who were hell bent on seeing Amodu's back are the same ones who will condemn every coach whose name is associated with the Eagles' vacancy. Eriksson was hounded out of Mexico for very poor results. Hoddle is anonymous, Laggerback could not qualify Sweden, Hiddink could not qualify Russia, Bruno Metsu is in the football wilderness, etc. Every coach has one baggage or the other and we best take cognizance of all that. The combo of Oliseh, Siasia, etc is laughable. With Egos as big as the third main land bridge we'll be in for a disaster. By the way, what experience does Oliseh have in top flight coaching? Don't even get me started on Siasia!

If what @Eric said is of substance then,we'll do credibly well @ the world cup.@felele the arm chair critic,ya post is just thoughtful, our players'r just too old I pray the NFF gives some younger nigerian players opportunity to fight 4 jerseys..can't wait til 28th february.

Dieter: 2010-02-25 16:08

To be honest i like the idea of having erikson or hoddle to coach us. They are for sure better than Amodu, thats for sure. What i dont understand is why we Nigerians cant understand that unity and to be consequent is the key to sucess! We must learn to keep to our word even in bad times. And we are not even havind bad times!!
we all know that this coaches are not really intressted in developing our footbal(i hope i am wrong).they just want take part in a WorldCup!! Why didnt they come forward earlier to coach us? The answer is they didnt wanted to do the dirty work. They didnt wanted to travell to Mozambiq, Kenia or Tunesia... But to wear a suit and travel to South Afrika is allright for them....

But now its just the wrong time to start something new.
The time schedule doesnt make sense to me at all!!

Why should we change our coach now? Amodu was not that bad!!

BULLY: 2010-02-25 17:49

Yes, well said. Let's unite to support your white coach no matter what. It is now that the Amodu haters are talking about ‘uniting’ to support the SE for the sake of advancing “our“ (theirs) football. Funny!! Where were you when Amodu needed your support? And why didn’t you unite to support Amodu when it was crucial. Now you come here talking rubbish. Are u just now finding out that it is important to unite? Too late, Selfish fools, I will not support any foreign coach. I HOPE THEY FAIL.

dacapo: 2010-02-25 18:31

@Dieter
I agreed with everything you said except for the part that Amodu was not that bad. To be honest, for a coach to play Mikel up front instead of his defensive role he has been exellently playing recently, have no real playmaker in a country that can boast of several and have Yakubu as your favorite player then amodu is PRETTY BAD

"The PTF wants a good outing for the Super Eagles in South Africa. That informed their decision to assemble the best of the technical crew for the team," the source said.

@Bully, LOL! Nigerians and their selective amnesia! They almost crucified us when we merely called for support for Amodu. They carried on like they had a collective vendetta against the person of Amodu. Why, in God's name, would anyone now want support for a whitie? It's what the late maestro, Fela, would call 'colonial mentality'.

big name coaches , very nice , shows we have money to meet their needs. but what did Ericksson achieve with england? and lastly mexico? nothing , it was reported that while in england he allowed all sorst of indiscipline. he is certainly not the man we need, we need a more stern coach.

To all the pro Amodus: Please, can you tell the house who came first and second in the interview conducted for the coaching position that saw Amodu assume the "undeserved" position? You guys should get over Amodu being imposed on whoever will finally become the new TA. Whatever record you guys think he has, he should keep it to his chest. PERIOD!!! It will be well if fans don't get hypertensive over perpetual, dismal performances put up by the SE, and instead play well and get a result!!!

Garvey: 2010-02-25 22:17

spot on Shijo. We all know who to blame for all the rubbish but we keep discussing Amodu. Typical Nigerians. The election to the glass house for the next 4 years will be coming up in August, let's find a way to stop these corrupt individuals administrating our football from winning the election in August again.

@hopewell,@kele and all those who keep hammering on who came first in the last interview, coaching interview is not academic where the first always gets the nod.... beside havent u heard about " the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first"?
The NFF chooses whoever they deemed fit for the job not on the basis of academic criterion so the issue of who comes first or second is inconsequential.
For once lets leave AMODU to be and look forward to a better World cup for the team irrespective of who leads the team there. I am convinced that AMODU will still be part of the technical crew as the head coach with assistance from the foreign TA which i presume most people have craved for.

By the way @kele why dont u save yourself heart attack by not calling others with different views names? It will help u better man.

Lets get positive guys
