Bucs can't cut into champs' lead

Posted: 3 February 2010 Time: 21:54

Orlando Pirates missed a great opportunity to cut SuperSport United’s lead at the top of the table after a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Bucs shaded the first half, but there was very little action in the second half as the players visibly tired after the six-week break.

However, it was an exciting start to the match as Siyabonga Nkosi forced Moeneeb Josephs into a smart diving save after just five minutes.

Straight after Pirates had their best chance of the game as Terror Fanteni capitalised on a slip by David Kannemeyer to run through on goal. However, his attempt was weak as Emille Baron rushed out to save with his legs.

Josephs again had to be alert to save from Daine Klate on 11 minutes, while Teko Modise, who looked full of running, tested Baron with a quick free-kick from all of 35 metres.

It was SuperSport who finished the half stronger as Klate’s looping header beat Josephs, but not Rooi Mahamutsa, who cleared off the line.

Klate soon had another great chance – this time shooting over from 10 metres out after being set up by Glen Salmon.

In the second half, Klate should have done better with a header from Laffor’s cross, while Zvenyika Makonese made a brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Brent Carelse a run in on goal.

Lebohang Mothibantwa, who came on for Mlungisi Mdluli at half-time, had a shot from distance flash wide as the game meandered out for a tame draw.

It means SuperSport maintain their three-point lead at the top of the table after Sundowns could only draw with Bloemfontein Celtic earlier in the evening.
