Soweto Derby ends in draw

Posted: 2 February 2010 Time: 21:52

Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs played out to a thrilling 0-0 draw at Coca-Cola Park on Tuesday evening.

Chiefs kept Greg Etafia busy, but could not get the ball past the Nigerian keeper, who made a number of important saves throughout the match, including late in the game to keep out Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s rasping drive.

Etafia denied Jimmy Jambo early on, before Thomas Sweswe just failed to connect with Josta Dladla’s free-kick.

On 17 minutes Siphiwe Tshabalala tested Etafia, who tipped his curling shot over the crossbar, and 20 minutes later Phumelele Bhengu had to be alert to block Dladla’s shot.

Swallows finally mounted a decent attack soon after – Lefa Tsutsulupa’s spectacular bicycle-kick going just wide of Arthur Bartman’s upright.

Abia Nale carved out the first chance at goal in the second half when he ran with the ball from well inside his own half on 63 minutes, beating a number of Swallows players, but then dragging his shot wide.

Chiefs had difficulties dealing with Tsutsulupa’s dead balls all evening long and were again caught out in the 67th minute when his floated free-kick from the right was headed towards goal by Siyabonga Nomvete. It took a full length dive by Bartman to his right to stop the ball from crossing the line.

Chiefs were unlucky not to have grabbed a winner when substitute Knowledge Musona teased the Swallows defence in the 83rd minute and then unleashed a powerful shot from the right which curled beyond Etafia, but hit the upright.

In the 88th minute Etafia was again under pressure; this time he needed to dive at full stretch to his left to turn Letsholonyane’s brilliant drive at goal round his post for a corner.

Chiefs had to settle for a draw, thus dropping crucial points in the title race.
