Bay, Leopards in pole positions

Two former PSL clubs, Bay United and Black Leopards, are both in prime position to capture their respective leagues following wins on Saturday, while Nathi Lions, Vasco da Gama and Witbank Spurs failed to grab the opportunity of securing a possible Promotional Play-off spot.

A 10-man Bay beat bottom-of-the-log Hanover Park 1-0 at Parow Park thanks to a 24th minute strike from the braided Nhlanhla Vilakazi after Umlilo took advantage of the strong south east gale.

In the second period, there was some confusion when referee Victor Gomes ruled out what looked like a second perfectly orchestrated Bay goal then moments later, the man in black red-carded the Port Elizabeth side's influential Jimmy Zakazaka for a second bookable offence, before adding teammate John Giannakis' name into his book.

Earlier, card-happy Gomes booked Umlilo defender Sakhile Makhathini and proceeded to do the same with two Hanover players as the home side battled valiantly but lacked the cutting edge despite introducing Peter Kirsten in front.

In Durban, Lions and Vasco played to a 1-1 draw with Keenin Lesch again on target for Carlos das Neves' team with a penalty, yet this result leaves both teams off the pace – fighting for that all-important Play-off spot with just two games to play as Bay lead the pack by a point.

At Ikamva Stadium, Thanda Royal Zulu defeated Ikapa Sporting 2-1 with goals from Lucky Mzizi and Sifiso Sithole, however, Sergio dos Santos' club only have themselves to blame for missing numerous chances and they look in real danger of the drop should Hanover spring a surprise.

FC Cape Town picked up another valuable point at Charles Mopeli following their goalless draw with Carara Kicks, who are now safe for another season.

In the Inland Stream, Leopards thrashed Spurs 4-0 at Tshifulanani to leapfrog them into second place but they still have two games in hand over leaders, African Warriors, who successfully knocked the wind out of relegation strugglers Winners Park 2-1.

In other results, University of Pretoria saved their NFD status for 2010/11 with a crucial 1-0 home win over Dynamos with Mbulelo Wambi the hero of the day but United FC and Batau who played to a 1-1 draw still have a bit of work to do.
