A top official of the Nigeria Football Federation has told KickOffNigeria.com that reaching the semifinal of the Africa Cup of Nations was not a contractual pre-condition for Shuaibu Amodu to keep his job.
Instead, the contract only stipulates the semifinal target as a condition for renewing his contract when the current deal runs out in August.
Prior to the tournament, the general belief in the country had been that the coach's job was conditional on his leading the team to the tournament's semifinal.
Hours after he did so, however, an official told KickOffNigeria.com that that was not the case.
"We laugh when we read these things in the media. There is nowhere in Amodu's contract where it says he has to reach the semifinal in order to take the team to the World Cup.
"What his contract says is that he should qualify the team for the Nations Cup and the World Cup and take the team to both competitions. The contract ends in August, after the World Cup, but the contract says if he reaches the semifinal of the Nations Cup, then he gets a renewal, in August," said the official, who declined to be named.
Another official said after the PTF handed down the Presidential directive to fire Amodu, that element of the contract was brought to their notice, and it was agreed that even if a foreign coach was brought in, Amodu would remain as part of the coaching set-up.
It is not clear however, how such an arrangement would work without friction.
