ANC semis not Amodu job condition

Posted: 2010-01-26 21:03

A top official of the Nigeria Football Federation has told KickOffNigeria.com that reaching the semifinal of the Africa Cup of Nations was not a contractual pre-condition for Shuaibu Amodu to keep his job.

Instead, the contract only stipulates the semifinal target as a condition for renewing his contract when the current deal runs out in August.

Prior to the tournament, the general belief in the country had been that the coach's job was conditional on his leading the team to the tournament's semifinal.

Hours after he did so, however, an official told KickOffNigeria.com that that was not the case.

"We laugh when we read these things in the media. There is nowhere in Amodu's contract where it says he has to reach the semifinal in order to take the team to the World Cup.

"What his contract says is that he should qualify the team for the Nations Cup and the World Cup and take the team to both competitions. The contract ends in August, after the World Cup, but the contract says if he reaches the semifinal of the Nations Cup, then he gets a renewal, in August," said the official, who declined to be named.

Another official said after the PTF handed down the Presidential directive to fire Amodu, that element of the contract was brought to their notice, and it was agreed that even if a foreign coach was brought in, Amodu would remain as part of the coaching set-up.

It is not clear however, how such an arrangement would work without friction.

@Ken Gadaffi,

No we dont see it as inconsequential.Football can be a good PR mechanism,GOD knows Nigeria certainly needs one at this time.

Bro,its time to be real.

Whether we like it or not the SE players are playing their hearts out. NIG, CIV, GHAN, CAM, EGY, ALG are the teams to beat. All other countries would play with their lives when palying these 6. It's a different ball game when they face other continent. Nobody should say Amodu is clueless. I would not agree with that. but he(Amodu)should not be naive either. Why would he continue to play Yakubu for 375 minutes without him shooting at goal for once except for the penalty awarded to Osase. while Martins has only palyed sixty minutes and has fired 5 and scoring one, Nsofor palyed like 45 minutes and fired 4. I observed that when martins and Nsofor came on against Zambia they turned the game around. we saw Nsofor shot at goal, Martins shot kissed the pole and we saw some flair. it therefore suggests that these 2 should always starts. Ghana would not be like Zambia. It's a warning. I therefore implore Amodu if he reads/listen to consider this formation.

By qualifying for the world cup and reaching the semis, Amodu has returned Nigeria to the elite of African football.
Cannot wait to see the FIFA ratings after the competition.

Amodu's semi-final ticket was a mere fluke.NFF and all Nigerians must not be deceived.All we need is a tactician and not a coach for the world cup

I cannot understand the so called nff,how can someone consider amodu after our perfomance in angola,yes we qualified for the semi finals,but how,we lost against well organised egypt,we struggled to beat benin who is nobody when we had the real eagles,who is mozambique,we went through hell before beating zambia in penalty.

Was it the great Super Eagles of Nigeria that played against Zambia last night? stil cant believe ma eyez...I thought it was Indian National team...A team dat even a secondary school leaver can predict there next move n substitution...A team were wen there is problem change of tactics isnt posible, only change of players....a team that has no midfield; defender-stricker,-defender-goalkeeper,-defender-throw in etc,...A team with all the possession but no shot on or off target bcos no match pattern but only team formation...A team that breaks world record in back passes to goalkeeper bcos no innovation or initiative nor creativity to attack. Amoudu should stop complainin abt not having creativ midfilders bcos he neva really tested any new players there....A team that the present first-team has turned 2 the reserve team... A team that a team captain (Kanu N****wo) was taking 2 a tournament 2 warm d bench....Another world record, were a team captain has only played less than 10 minutes after 4 games without injury or suspection...A team whose attack is lead by Yakubu Aiyegbeni; sometimes i cant believe that is d same position that was once played by rashidi yekini, samson siasia,Julius Aghahowa etc...Is Amodu tellin me dat Yakubu Aiyegbeni is d best person for that top striking position in Super Eagles with countless number of players all over europe? or is Yakubu making his team bcos they are both from Northern part of Edo state? (yes, yakubu is Amodu's brother frm Edo north). Nigerians dnt hate Amodu, we only dont lik d way we play since he took over...2 touch line clearances against Zambia(lowest ranked team in cup of nations),a goal line clearance against benin,only beat benin due 2 penalty cause by anoidable benin handball,beat mozambique due 2 osazee's creativity,no direction no control flow in game, players havent learnt anything frm a coach,having no standard no 1 left-back,right-back,attacking midfielder,right-winger,left-winger, though only top striker; Yakubu aiyegbeni...A yakubu even Macaulay chrisantus is better than....'94 team has finidi,amunike,amokachi,okocha,yekini n co and all nigerians knew that standard position but Amodu's SE,half fit yobo pairs bench warmer nwaneri,bench warmer yusuf 4 right back n amateur bench warmer echiejile 4 left back,3 diffensiv midfielders,2 wild attackers wit no clear purpose but just hold d ball and run towards opponent's attack n the worst; A SUPER EAGLES ATTACK LEAD BY HALF FIT YAKUBU AIYEGBENI.....IMAGINE OHHH! E ven wen he was fully fit he was stil below standard...A coach whose only pattern is "hold on 2 the ball," yusuf always pass 2 osazee" etc.... the whole scenario is just 2 f***kin predictable...it got so predictable that d Zambian coach was laughing....Amodu is patriotic and has done his better but I believe Nigeria deserves better...Moreover,mancini won d SERIA trophy in Italy but Inter milan stil sacked him and employed Jose mourinho but dey were ambitious n believed dey deserved better than what Mancini has 2 offer.Please lets look 4 a good n ambitious foreign coach n stop makin ourselves d laughter of d whole world bcos wen d world cup starts, they will b no hidin place 4 Super Eagles.

Yeah NFF! That’s the way to instill confidence in the coaching and playing staff. Nice to reduce the pressure, though it would’ve been better if you had clarified this much sooner. Thanks anyway.

Some people come here and post comments thinking coaching (and may be everything else) is only common sense. Only illiterates, literally, (and their likes) think that way. There is common sense in everything but it is not all-inclusive.

A professional with specific training is much more reliable than a by-stander who is basing their argument on common sense alone.
A professional sees the intricacies that are not so obvious to the common person.

Would any of us prefer a common sense bus driver to perform surgery on us over a professionally-trained medical doctor? Probably only Johnson.

To all the expert coaches in here; though Amodu is not perfect (no one’ll ever be) I’d rather have him coach the SE than all of you combined.
Be humble in your critiques, and realize that Amodu is a trained professional. You’re not.

One of the sad things about being here is that you share the same forum with psychotics like detmolder.

THE AMODU SAGA IS SOMETHING OF A TALE OF DIFFERENT SIDE. LET'S BE VERY REALISTIC, THIS MAN AMODU IS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COACHES IN NIGERIA BASED ON RECORD YET HE IS A MAN THAT HAVE PRODUCED GREAT RESULT WITH AN UGLY LOOK.

HIS PERFORMANCE SO FAR AT THE PRESENT NATIONS CUP HAVE BEEN SOME WORTH HORRIFIC YET HE HAS COME UP WITH A SEMI FINAL TICKET. OUR CRY IS FOR A BETTER TEAM DISPLAY AND A BIT OF FREE FLOW FOOTBALL THAT WE ARE USED TO. I DUELLY UNDERSTAND THAT THAT IS THE JOY OF THE SPORT.

THIS PRESENT EAGLES CAN PERFORM WITH OR WITHOUT A COACH. WHAT WE HAVE SEEN SO FAR IS NOTHING BUT THE SHARE BRILLIANCE AND DETERMINATION OF THE PLAYERS.

WHY IS THE AMODU STORY A TALE OF DIFFERENT SIDES? WHY NOT SACK HIM? WHY NOT LEAVE HIM TO CONTINUE? THIS IS WHAT WE ARE ALL CONTESTING. WELL, LET'S LOOK AT IT THIS WAY.

AMODU IS A GOOD LUCK CHARM BY MARE SITTING AT THE BENCH. THOUGH HE LOOK LIKE AN OBJECT OF OFFENSE YET HE GIVES WHAT HE IS MADE OF "LUCK" EVERY TEAM NEEDS THAT. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

WATCHING NIGERIA PLAY THESE DAYS CAN MAKE ONE CRY. IT IS SO SAD MOST ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SEE YAKUBU PUTTING ON THAT CAPTAIN BAND AND EVEN GRACING THE FIELD. IT SHOWS YOU HOW POWERFUL AMODU'S LUCK CAN BE. EVERY TIME YAKUBU IS INCLUDED IN THAT TEAM IT IS JUST A MINUS ONE PLAYER.

IF A BAD TEAM AS BAD AS WE HAVE SEEN WILL PLAY EVEN WITH A MAN MINUS FROM THE START DUE TO THE INCLUSSION OF YAKUBU AND STILL WIN, THEN IT MUST ALL BOIL DOWN TO A CERTAIN FORCE. THE AMODU SYNDROME (LUCK)

THEREFORE, FELLOW NIGERIANS, LET US NOT KILL OURSELVES OVER NFF CHOICE OF AMODU. HE IS ALREADY A CONTRADICTION OF THE HIGHEST DEGREE. HE IS LIKE A BLUNT AXE THAT CUTS AT THE END. AMODU IS LIKE A CHILD THAT IS BORN UGLY BUT FOR THE SAKE OF THE GIFT OF LIFE ONE WILL POLITELY SAY AT THE NATIVITY WHAT A HEALTHY CHILD. LOL. THAT IS AMODU. I WILL LIKE TO LEAVE AND NOT DIE SO DO MANY NIGERIANS, WE LOVE THE GAME SO MUCH AND OUR COMMITMENT TO THE NAME NIGERIA IN FOOTBALL WILL NOT LET US GO TO SLEEP WHILE THE EAGLES ARE PLAYING THEREFORE DEAR NFF, PLEASE SPEND A LITTLE MORE OUT OF YOUR ALREADY TIGHT BUDGET TO BRING IN A BEAUTICIAN TO COMB UP THE EAGLES AND TO MAKE THEM UP.

ALL I WILL HUMBLY SAY AS A CONCLUSSION IS, GIVE US A TACTICIAN AND ADD AMODU TO THE TEAM IN WHATEVER CAPACITY BECAUSE OF HIS...

Nonetheless, i stil reiterate my earlier stance that the result of the WC is "inconsequential". Yes, you pointed out that the WC is a good PR for the country but i tell u, the country's image is already so battered that winning the world cup will not make much difference other than the leaders should try to cleanse the mess they have created. What PR did winning the Olympic bring to NIGERIA?

To redeem our image, All Nigerians wherever they might be have to change their orientation and all those involved in the social vices( needless to mention them as we all know) should turn a new leaf.

My biggest concern about the game against Ghana is fatigue. Amodu has managed to revolve players a bit but players like Yusuf Mohammed, Obasi, Yakubu , Mikel and Osaze have played in almost all the games and need some rest. To make matters worse we played an extra 30 minutes and a day later then the Ghanaians. Coupled with the fact that a lot of the Ghanaians a much younger players we have a problem on our hands.
I suggest he starts

Let no one attribute the success recorded by SE in this tournament to Amodu or Luck. It is divine intervention in the affairs of Nigeria. Many months ago, I said on the forum that Nigeria by divine intervention will qualify for the WC. Many did not believe and called me names. Now hear this again. SE WILL FUMBLE AND WOBBLE TO WIN THE FINAL of this year's AFCON. When Ghana falls on Thursday, let no one say it is Amodu or Luck. It is divine intervention to redeem Nigeria. It is not for nothing that Nigeria has the greatest no of churches in the world.

@Benito
How far can luck carry you? Where was the luck against egypt? Can we count on the luck if we meet Argentina, Brasil, spain, or even egypt in the Final (I pray we get to the final).

Pls don't tell me it was luck that saw us through the Zambians humiliation. I'll rather say it was the inexperience of the Zambians strike force. If we had played any of the teams I mentioned earlier, would we have been lucky. Must we always count on luck?

The team is fast losing its relevance in world football. I heard on the radio a few days ago that Potugal had canceled the proposed friendly with Nigeria in preparing for the world cup. I guess they figured out that this Amodu team has nothing to offer them in terms of showing their weaknesses so they can improve it b4 the WC. JUST IMAGINE

However, I completely agree with you that Amodu can still be a part of the crew AS LONG AS HE IS NOT THE ONE CALLING THE SHOTS I.E DRAWING UP TEAM LIST AND MAKING SUBSTITUTIONS.

@WATCHYOURMOUTH:
You just make me laugh!! You asked this question "WHICH NATIONAL TEAM IN THE WORLD THAT EMPLOYED A NEW COACH FEW MONTHS BEFORE WORLD AND YET THEY GO AHEAD AND LIFT UP THE TROPHY?????????"

The ans is simple NONE!! BUT LET ME ASK YOU THIS, ARE YOU EXPECTING TO LIFT THE WORLD CUP WITH AMODU?? Sacking or at least relegating him under someone who can do the job is the best thing that can happen to Nigeria football if done in time, infact NOW!!

While I agree that there are no small teams in football nowadays, yet Benin, Moz and Zambia are no way near Naija standard. Yet Amodu has turned the team to sluggish defensive side. Now any team even Haiti (with all due respect) will fancy their chance against us.

@Benito

@Benito, your comment is one of the wisest and balanced comment that I have ever read on this site. the truth is that Amodu is a very useless, biased and sentimental coach who does not have a clue about modern football but we can never rule something out he is a very lucky man. some may not believe it but luck is a factor also. since he started the WC campain his first loss in the competitive matches was against Egypt. He is so sentimental about Yakubu that he must field him always as our number one striker. he never discovered any new player it is the same set of inherited problems according to him that he must select. see the Ghanian side and the preference they give to their upcoming ones who truly deserve a place in the senior team. our mid field problem could have been solved if we also value youthfulness. Rabiu Ibrahim is there, so is Lukman Haruna, as arrogant as Lukman is if he finds a coach that can cut him to size the guy is a priceless asset for Nigeria. Onyekachi Okonkwo is in a brilliant form now, etc. the defence is a serious problem now because out of sentiment and bias he encumbered the list with sick and out of form defender. with Apam out against Ghana, may God rescue us because we need a miracle in the central defence. he despised all the home-based player not because of merit but because of ignorance and incompetence. he went to the tournament with one-third of the players being one-legged bunch who are just warming the bench and looking like toothless bulldogs. the guy is lucky and to his credit he truly qualified us for the WC so i dont think he should be kicked out so that even God wont be angry with us but we need a technician whom he can work with as an assistant. even if his luck keeps moving us on (which is unlikely to last forever) the future of our football is at risk. he will destroy everything called future completely if the situation isnt salvaged on time. UP EAGLES, UP NIGERIA, NFF... i dont know what to say about you. FORUMITES... no mater how we all react, we all mean well for our country and i believe better days will surely come. God will hear our cry.

I am struggling to understand what a lot of us really want. Some days ago, some people here in this forum ask for Keshi and others for Siasia. Amodu have asked for Keshi. Others here are shouting and abusing him. Its always going to be so. What ever choice made by Amodu or NFF will not go down well with every body. The coach selects a team, people will still shout and abuse him....too bad .

Now just like the last under 21. A lot called for the coach to be sacked and replaced by Siasia, NFF did. What was the result. Disaster. A lot jumped into his defense and said the time was too short. This same group never remember that the time was too short when they where calling for the sack of the coach. Now, they have started again. Sack Amodu, replace him with Siasia and one white man. Is there any best losers opportunity in world cup. We may not have such opportunity again. Tomorrow, we may hear again that the time is too short... Who knows what will have happened if we stocked to that young man we sacked.

On Amodu, I feel he needs help. But I don't belong to the school of taught that wants him sacked. NO. He deserves to be in the world cup with the team. He has taken thus far to semi finals of African Nations Cup. He can do more. He needs a hand he can work with to support him. With good contracting terms and job responsibilities well defined.

Most importantly we need a developmental plan for our football and other sports, just like every other sector is crying for help in this country. Lets not forget them too. We all need to join hand and make our country a better place. We can not achieve this with all this our abuses on one another. We are by doing so exposing our poor training background which is one of our biggest problem as a nation.

Lets have a better way of posting comments here.

CAf is not clear in their statements. First I had Togo had infringed the regulations by going to Angola by road instead of by plane.It makes good sense that they broke the regulations of travel But when it come to government interference I do not agree.Which government on earth can remain quite when such has occurred to its citizens? Caf must rethink its decision to ban Togo. That country has a lot of talented players who are a pride of Africa and Africa cannot afford to leave them idle.
