Host Angola’s 2-0 victory over Kinnah Phiri’s Malawi in Luanda on Thursday night means that any one of the four teams in Group A still have a chance to progress to the second stage of the African Nations Cup.

Flavio put Angola ahead in the 48th minute and Manucho doubled the lead in the 54th minute.

With one round remaining, Angola lead the group with four points, followed by Malawi (on goal-difference) and Algeria on three points and Mali on one.

Fixtures for the last round see Angola v Algeria and Malawi up against Mali.

Outright wins for any of the first three will see them automatically go through to the next round, while Mali need a win and for Angola to beat World Cup entrants Algeria in order to progress.

A draw between the latter two will mean that the fate of Mali (provided they beat Malawi) and Algeria will be decided on goal-difference.

Should Malawi and Mali draw, the Flames will also have to rely on Angola winning, because an Angola-Algeria draw will also mean that that their fate and that of Algeria will be decided on goal-difference.

In case of a tie qualification will be based on head to head. Check CAF rules for the tournament. It is head to head first then Goal difference.

I would like to see the underdogs Malawi goal through. It will make the tournament exciting. They have no big names but yet so proud to be representing their countries. Country with no money and players get paid £400 as win bonus but upsetting the so called giants.

Some people are calling Malawi Bafana Bafana team B due to 11 of their players playing in SA Mvera league. Done well so far. Good luck.

@Maxwell 2010-01-15 00:29, please don't expose yourself, you are ill-informed mfana, look, in case of equal points, they look at goal difference first, then if goal difference is the same then they look at head to head.
