Eneramo dropped, Obasi in

Posted: 4 January 2010 Time: 8:27 pm

Esperance striker Michael Eneramo has been removed from Nigeria's African Nations Cup final list of 23 and substituted with Hoffenheim forward Chinedu Obasi.

Nigeria, without any pre-tournament camping, sent in their list of 23 before the January 1 deadline to avoid paying a $10 000 penalty. Eneramo's name was on that initial list, along with Wolfsburg forward Obafemi Martins, whose fitness was a source of doubt.

But team Media Officer Idah Peterside told KickOffNigeria.com that Martins proved his fitness in training with the squad, and a decision was made to keep the impressive Obasi.

"We had to send in our list before the deadline to avoid paying a fine. But the rules allow us to make a substitution before the final tournament kicks off.

"So after the few days of training here, the technical crew decided to include Obasi in the list. We wrote to CAF asking for permission to make a substitution, and they have just written back to us giving the go-ahead.

"So Eneramo has been dropped and Obasi will take his place," Peterside said.

Eneramo scored for Nigeria against Republic of Ireland in an international friendly in London in May, 2009 and also Nigeria’s second goal against Tunisia in a crucial 2010 World Cup qualifier in Abuja in September.

 Nigeria’s squad for Angola:

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama, Bamidele Aiyenugba, Austin Ejide

Defenders: Taye Taiwo, Joseph Yobo, Elderson Echiejile, Danny Shittu, Obinna Nwaneri, Onyekachi Apam, Chidi Odiah, Yusuf Mohammed

Midfielders: Dickson Etuhu, Sani Kaita, Oluwaseyi Olofinjana, Mikel Obi, Nwankwo Kanu, Yusuf Ayila, Kalu Uche

Strikers: Osaze Odemwingie, Obafemi Martins, Chinedu Obasi, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obinna Nsofor

A clear case of indecision now! Methinks these decision is entirely suspect as Eneramo has shown persistent guts at these stage...Having said that i am still very comfortable with Amodu's decision as regards those players listed...WE will learn from the Ghanian misadventure come next week that it does'nt pay to invite kids to major championship...

amodu now you have made me happy, this is a alright squad the changes for 2010 worldcup should be
ibrahim- kaita
lukman- etuhu
uche- fat yak
adeleye- nwaneri

with this 4 players added for world cup then we should parade a good performance. i am very happy that nigeria football golden generation is coming back. we already have good strikers, alright defenders so if we can get this frio

stanley okoro
ibrahim
lukman
nwankwo and blend them with the team then we would be the best in africa once again

@Billion i can now join you to call on Amodu's continuous stay even if we fail in the nations cup...From what i'v seen it seems the problem of the Eagles stems from the ill advice of the the technical assistants particularly the arrogant Daniel Amokachi..i do expect Amodu not to be cowed by this lads into making any kind of judgement as he will be doomed & blamed for it....Go eagles go! Be bullish!

why have everybody been critising eneramo as if he is a bad player. for me eneramo can be nigeria drogba,i watch everytime in his club and he is a good player. the problem i have is that him and yakubu should not be playing together in one team first 11. he has played 6 games and have been impressive in 2. just look at the match against tunisia he changed everything if he had started that game we would have won. i love obasi and i know he can be our etoo but am scared he might get injured, he is too prone to injury hope he stays fit. one of those 5 defensive midfilders should have been dropped for eneramo, one thing you guys should remember is that we would likely play tunisia in quater finals so we may miss eneramo for that game.

ENERAMO SHUDN'T HAVE BEEN THE BAIT HERE.AS FAR AS MYSELF AND FOOTBALL IS CONCERNED HE IS BETTER THAN HALF FIT YAKUBU.HE HAS BEEN CONSISTENT FOR CLUB AN HAS ALWAYS SHOWN SOME FRESHNESS IN THE NATIONAL TEAM.I GUESS WE NEED SOME POWER UP FRONT WHICH YAKUBU CANNOT OFFER.BUY WELL TEH COACHES DECISSION IS FINAL.NIGERIA GOES INTO A TOURNAMENT OF THIS CALIBER WITH AN AVERAGE HEIGHT OF 1.75METERS UPFRONT.(MARINS,NSOFOR,ODEMWINGIE AND OBASI) wow!!!
yours sincerely

This is a nice news.. I know amodu can't drop yabuku cos they come 4rm d same town..after pressures 4rm nff, technical crew, the captain (kanu) and fans across d nation, he finally succumbed.. What he now needs to do is 2 select his starting line up without sentiments..b.o.l.

With this great decision SE can now be regarded as a team with prolific attack, resilient midfield bt a shaky defence...
Adeleye,Olubayo,Rabiu,Haruna,Azeez, Nwankwo,Ik, Anichebe to provide the missing links.

Better. Next, they should make Yakubu watch Dennis Oliech tape of the Kenya/Nigeria game in Kenya. This will give him an idea of how hungry a striker should be. Better still, let him watch the tape of Nigeria/Senegal game in Mali where one lone striker from Senegal went through the Nigerian defense like laxative, to score the winning goal. We don't need a striker that is keen in passing the ball to someone else. We need the type that will strike terror in the heart of any defense.
