Vice-president Goodluck Jonathan is expected to be the chief guest of honour at Monday’s Appreciation Dinner for the Super Eagles being organised by the Nigeria Football Federation.
The event is billed to take place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja on Monday night.
Also in line to share tables and cutlery with the Super Eagles are senate-president David Mark and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole.
“This Appreciation Dinner is being held in honour of the Super Eagles for the great honour they done the country through their qualification for the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup finals. When you appreciate people, they feel great and are ready to even do more the next time.
“We are hoping the players and technical crew will feel motivated by this show of love by all Nigerians as they look ahead to very important competitions in the coming year,” chairman of the Committee set up by the NFF to organise the Dinner, Barrister Musa Amadu, said at the weekend.
A memorable evening is at hand at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, with a number of the Super Eagles stars already in town, as well as a number of star performers of the past Eagles teams of the 1980s and 1990s also called.
The Organising Committee has also invited State Governors, Commissioners of Sports, chieftains of the National Sports Commission, members of the National Assembly’s sports committees, members of the Presidential Task Force on Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification, captains of industry, NFF sponsors, former NFF Presidents and General Secretaries, stakeholders and a number of special guests lined up to spice up the evening.
Organisers announced at the weekend that Nollywood stars Aki and Pawpaw, as well as Kanayo O Kanayo, will thrill the audience inside the spacious auditorium.
There will also be a special documentary on Nigeria football’s glorious days, as well as a documentary on how to tackle the menace of malaria that is ravaging the African continent.
Coming days after the Nigeria Football Federation held a special dinner to honour the national U-17 team that won silver at the recently-concluded Fifa U-17 World Cup, NFF President Sani Lulu Abdullahi said the Federation is conscious of the need to appreciate good performances by the national teams.
“When you appreciate someone for a job well-done, he is motivated to do even better the next time. We are going into a very critical year, in which we have to feature at the African Nations Cup finals and the World Cup. We must always be conscious of the need to treat the players specially so that they will feel wanted and appreciated, and go onto the field to the nation proud.”
