Santos and Orlando Pirates drew 0-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Friday night.
Early action saw the two sides evenly matched – despite play going from end to end, neither team was able to create any chances on goal.
After about 25 minutes the Buccaneers began to look more threatening and more inspired in attack and they came close to opening the scoring when Teko Modise sent a header soaring just over the bar after he met Dikgang Mabalane’s inviting cross.
While the first half was played at an entertaining pace, chances were few and far between and the home side’s first and only opportunity only came in the 41st minute when Phikolethu Spelman misfired after a good combination between Erwin Isaacs and Ryan Chapman down the right flank.
The Peoples’ Team had the first chance of the second half with 64 minutes on the clock as the game remained tightly contested.
The opportunity saw Eleazar Rodgers heading towards and empty net after a mistake by Moeneeb Josephs, but his effort lacked power and Rooi Mahamutsa was able to clear off the line.
Five minutes later Bucs were close to scoring when Thulasize Mbuyane cut in from the left and fired a shot just wide of the far upright.
Santos had two wonderful opportunities with 10 minutes to go, but Isaacs fired over the bar from 12-yards with only Josephs to beat, while Graham King couldn’t react fast enough to steer a point blank header into the net.
Terror Fanteni could have snuck the win for Pirates in the final minute of regulation time, but it wasn’t to be as the former Ajax man failed to hit the target.
