Sundowns beat 10-man Wits

Posted: 8 December 2009 Time: 21:51

A goal by Katlego Mphela in the second half helped Mamelodi Sundowns beat 10-man Bidvest Wits 1-0 at the Super Stadium on Tuesday night.

Wits have now gone without a win in 12 matches after Mphela's headed goal, a 57th minute red card for captain Tefu Mashamaite and a disallowed first half effort by Kadi sealed their fate.

Sundowns struggled in the first half with little cohesiveness despite edging the position over Wits who were more direct and quick with their attacking.

In truth, there was little excitement in the opening 45 minutes as the home side seemed content to sit back and allow their visitors to come at them.

The Clever Boys did have the ball in Downs' net in the 19th minute but the goal was disallowed when Mark Haskins beat the offside trap, rounded keeper Brian Baloyi but instead of going for goal, Haskins then passed to Calvin Kadi who netted into an empty net but was ruled offside by referee Victor Hlungwani on the insistence of his assistant Stephen Moshotle. The call looked marginal.

The Students kept up the pressure throughout the opening half but couldn't get the goal to break the a 0-0 scoreline – which remained until half-time.

In the second half, Katlego Mphela failed to capitalise on a goalkeeping mistake from Wits teenager Darren Keet in the 52nd minute.

The tide of the match turned for goal in the 57th minute though. The Students' skipper and defensive lynchpin Mashamaite was shown a straight red card by referee Hlungwani after the defender pulled down Mphela who was racing for goal and was moving into a goal-scoring position.

Two minutes later Keet produced a tremendous save to deny Downs hard working midfielder anchorman Matthew Pattison a goal when he tipped Pattison's goal bound shot over his crossbar.

From that moment on the pressure from Sundowns on Wits became relentless, despite Wits' coach Roger de Sa attempting to reshape his team with tactical substitutions.

The pressure finally told six minutes from time when Mphela brought his goal tally in the league to 13. He headed home Pelembe's 84th minute corner to give Downs three valuable points and keep them in the title race.

Dissapointing win.

But I like the fact that this win will motivate them to beat SuperSport. They will go to SSU game thinking of winning the league and that is a good thing for title challengers. Reduce SSU lead. Good luck...

i would like to advice downs management, that they must not buy another players, sandiland it's ok and we must make the best team on the current players, coz we need the players to jell as a team,so buying new players in this time off the year,it will cost us the leg title,so let's make use off what we have and well done for winning last nite game.shapa motsepe shapa

according to fifa rule that was not offside. if the goalkeeper (in this case Baloyi ) comes out of his 18 erea there should be at least another sundowns player in front of Cadi, if Haskins proceed by himself that would be a goal. Baloyi created that offside by coming out of his 18 erea.

Killer is our hero but I'm getting worried by Zothwane who seems to be lost when given a chance to showcase his skills. Was our coach just stopping Mmotong from leaving when he included him the last time because he played well but now he's no more again.

Some players should also help Killer in scoring because only him seems to be knowing where the goalposts are mo rena, I mean Pelembe missed yerr what even myself would have scored with eyes closed aowa we need those goals.

Killer is scoring left, right & centre but Salmon wins player of the month. Pattison plays his heart out yet Miller wins Man of the match. Is there a 3rd force against Downs or what?
