For the second week in a row, a top-of-the-table NFD Inland Stream club has suffered a demoralising loss, while Coastal leaders Bay United also succumbed to lower opposition during a weekend of upsets.
First, Dynamos lost to University of Pretoria, then Black Leopards slipped up 2-1 against rock bottom Winners Park who netted through Thabo Ramasoeu and Tshepo Malesa to give them at least some hope of avoiding the dreaded drop.
Furthermore, with Dynamos again dropping vital points, after being held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Batau FC and African Warriors scoring a controversial 2-1 victory over United FC at Charles Mopeli Stadium, both former table-toppers now find themselves adrift of Warriors – who have 24 points from 13 games.
However, United officials were clearly not happy with the referee who red-carded one of their players and awarded two penalties, one in each half, which gives Warriors a one-point lead over Leopards in the race to reach the money-spinning PSL.
Jemaine Christian and Sibusiso Mokoena netted their spot kicks successfully.
On Sunday, a brace by Witbank Spurs’ striker Ralph Matema saw the home side overcome Steve Barker’s AmaTuks who were awarded two penalties, but only scored one through Richard Ferreira – with Denis Omina missing his.
In the Inland Stream, a strike on Saturday by Brian Kgafane briefly lifted Vasco da Gama above Bay United on goal difference following the ex-PSL team’s 2-0 home loss to Carara Kicks in Port Elizabeth.
But after Nathi Lions whipped last placed Hanover Park 3-0 in Cape Town the next day, the Durban side now lead the log by a point, thanks to Siphamandla Zaca, Songwe Chalwe and Manelisa.
In KZN, the match between Thanda Royal Zulu and FC Cape Town ended all square at 1-1, with the reliable Reason Chiloane netting for Sammy Troughton’s team and Morne Davids for the visitors.
After 13 games, Thanda sit with 13 points, just three above bottom of the log Hanover Park.
