World Cup Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan is confident that electricity problems will not interrupt the Final Draw on Friday night.
Speaking to a select group of media on Tuesday morning, Jordaan responded to a question relating to the recent power outages at Orlando and Loftus stadiums during football matches.
“It won’t happen in Cape Town or at other stadiums. Besides, event requirements are that generated power is used and only in the need for back-up supply would you switch to grid power,” Jordaan says.
“The draw on Friday night will follow these requirements and we are comfortable with the plan.”
Jordaan went on to say that Cape Town is in a unique situation to the rest of the country in that the Green Point Stadium is situated where it is.
“Many countries will build a stadium in a derelict area to help improve the quality of that place. If you look at Wembley in London you get an idea,” he says.
“But with Cape Town you have a world-class convention centre, world-class shopping centre (the Waterfront) and the stadium all within close range.
“At least three of South Africa’s stadiums will be amongst the in the world and that is a fantastic achievement.
“They are all unique in that you can see properly from every seat in the venue. Even in Germany in 2006, some stadiums did not have a clear view from the corners.”
Jordaan then highlighted that 200 countries will tune in to watch the draw and around 700 million viewers, putting into perspective just how big this event is.
