Good point for Urban Warriors

Ajax Cape Town put in a good performance to earn a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at the Boland Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the heat, the match got off to a cracking start with Thabo September pulling a shot wide after two minutes and then firing over the bar three minutes later, following two set-piece routines.

The League champions suffered a set-back in the eighth minute when goalkeeper Emille Baron was forced to leave the field after a clash of heads with Sifiso Vilakazi; his place being taken by Denis Onyango.

Matsatsantsa went in front in the 16th minute, thanks to a Daine Klate free-kick special which gave Hans Vonk no chance – a stunning effort.

Ajax slowly played their way back into the game as the likes of Sameegh Doutie and Thulani Serero began giving SuperSport problems.

It was thanks to Serero’s persistence that the Urban Warriors equalised in the 34th minute – after the youngster had cut in and forced Bongani Khumalo into making a sliding challenge, the ball fell for Franklyn Cale to slam home from close range.

Glen Salmon wasted a good chance to put United back in front when he turned a close-range shot over the bar in the 40th minute, while George Maluleka squandered a chance in first-half injury time for the home side when he hesitated too long in front of goal.

The second half failed to produce the same number of goal opportunities as the first, although the Cape team did enjoy far more of the play in the second stanza.

Vilakazi had a good chance to put Ajax ahead in the 64th minute when Onyango spilled Cale’s cross, but the shot went straight at the United keeper.

Vilakazi also had another couple of half chances, but could not make it count, while at the other end of the field, Laffor was a constant threat on the counter-attack, although Vonk had very little work to do as most of the action took place in the other half of the field.
