Sundowns sink Pirates

Posted: 25 November 2009 Time: 21:30

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash played at Super Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The goals were scored by Luvhengo Mungomeni and Benedict Vilakazi.

This win over Pirates will serve as a huge morale booster as Sundowns launch a late chase on runaway leaders SuperSport United, who beat Kaizer Chiefs in the other big game of Wednesday night.

Sundowns got off to a dream start when Mungomeni managed to head home despite pressure from Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs as his defence failed to deal with a dipping free-kick from Elias Pelembe, who was named the man-of-the-match.

The Brazilians were clearly the better side in the opening half as they created more chances and enjoyed the lions share of the possession and this frustrated Pirates’ game plan as their wingers Phenyo Mongalo and Dikgang Mabalane saw little action and this resulted in poor supply to strikers Mbuyane and Katlego Mashego.

In the 32nd minute, Pelembe disposed Mabalane in what looked like an obstruction that was not spotted by referee Charl Theron and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that ricocheted from the cross-bar with Josephs well beaten.

Pirates missed out on a golden opportunity to draw level when Mabalane ballooned his shot from inside the box with only Baloyi to beat after being released by Mashego two minutes from the break.

Lebohang Mokoena was denied an opportunity to score against his former club by Josephs in the 52nd minute as once again the Pirates defence was caught napping in dealing with a Sundowns cross from the right wing.

Sundowns ensured the three points as Pelembe delivered a low pass to Vilakazi who beat Josephs as Pirates suffered their fourth defeat of the season and they have a mountain to climb to refresh their faint title aspirations.

Good game for Sundowns but Krol is running out of ideas... the substitution was poor. A lot is at stake and we can not afford a stubborn and inflexible coach.... inconsistency is the name of the game at Pirate.. we win by 3 goals and loss by the same margin.. that uncalled for.

Well done to the Pretoria teams, I must admit there's no way that Chiefs & Pirates will win the league this season.

This was the worst game this season , my team was pathetic

Pretoria Soccer League is the new PSL name. What a game by Sundowns, thats more like it boys. Now lets be consistent. It was one of our best game this season, although i don't think we reached our full potential, we can still do better.

I said this longtime ago, Elias Pelembe is the best player in the PSL by a mile. Sharp Madawana Shapa...!!!

Vintage Sundowns, this game proved why Pelembe is cosidered by experts to be by far the best player in the country at the moment.
The Pirates coach did well by replacing attack minded players with defensive players in order to keep the score respectable.

It hurts like a sharp knife cutting a tip of a toe to admit that we compete in Pretoria Soccer League. Congrats to the teams of my native town (Downs and SSU). Sorry to my bitter rival Bucs and my team Kaizer Chiefs. I hope Kaizer uses this transfer period to secure real talent.

Da ref was biased against Downs. I celebrated the win but Theron needs to b brought to book. Wel, disregarding the score, Bugs wer taught a soccer lesson. Only 1 Mbuyane's shot was a threat to Downs. We need to get more good results if we are to protect our record. Seing SSU is playing teams with no purpose, we need to take it up to ourselves as organisers to stop them. Damn pathetic chips...The so-called soweto janets

Krol i dont know if you are reading this, but if you do, please read further, its just a word of advise.

First: its evident that you cannot use subs, thats why you choose to play 11 players 90 if you foresee an easy win.

Advise: if you lead then you should bring in one or two players that are not playing regularly, so that you can see their performances in front of the crown. And it will also work in your favour because you will be able to notify hungry players. And you wont worry if someone gets injured, because you'll be having replacements whom you once saw play in the field.

Secondly: it seems like you dont know your players or you are favouring some players

Advise: field players according to their abilities and your plan execution. Oupa Manyisa, the boy is slim and he doesnt have anything special (remember Jabu Pule was fast and skillful), but oupa is just and average slim build players. In the game he only touched the ball two times. He entered as a sub and went to play hide and seek in the field. your first sub should have been Mothibantwa for Kamwendo and switch him with Jali. Then the second sub should have been Ntombeni for Gert Schalkwyk adding up the fire power up front. Thats why we pirates players we were not upset with Kosta Papic because he made pirates play aggresively attacking football.

Thirdly: stop being predictable.

Advise: teams that are coming to play against pirates know very well the possible starting line up and it fit their plan and what they have practised in the training field. So rotate your players.

Fourthly: our strikers are not prolific

Advise; provide extra shooting lessons for the strikers,

Last but not least: our players has some lack of intelligence. They tend to choose the most difficult pass over an easy one.
