Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic is not buying into the idea of throwing Itumeleng Khune straight back between the posts to replace Arthur Bartman, though he declares that the Bafana Bafana keeper remains the number one at the club.
Khune’s return from injury after three months out has been brewing up an intense debate about whether he should be handed back his place between the posts.
However, Bartman has performed beyond expectations; so much so that there isn’t a performance related reason as yet why he should be demoted to the bench.
“We have five goalkeepers at Kaizer Chiefs, but only one keeper can play at a time,” says the Serbian.
“Khune has just come back from injury and sat on the bench for the first time in our last match. But he is still our number one ... there is absolutely no doubt about that. However, we need to be careful with how we get him back to playing again.
We shouldn’t rush Khune at all because not only do we need him, but Bafana also need him,” says Vermezovic, pointing out that Bartman will remain between the posts for Wednesday night’s encounter against SuperSport.
“Arthur is in good form at the moment and there is absolutely no need to change that. He will most definitely be between the posts against SuperSport.”
The 37 year-old keeper has built up his confidence in a superb way, keeping four clean-sheets in the last five games.
